Description
In the seventh installment of the Ultima series you — the Avatar — must go back to Britannia and investigate a series of strange events. Two hundred years have passed since your last visit and much has changed since then. An unknown being who calls himself the Guardian has appeared and is forcing everyone to bow to his whims. In addition magic doesn't work as it should, it seems that all of the mages have gone insane, and quiet towns are being terrorized with ritualized murders. It is unclear what is happening, but initial signs point to some kind of organization called the Fellowship. It is up to you to unravel the mystery and find out what is really going on in Britannia.

Ultima 7 is arguably one the best in the series. With enhanced graphics, sound, and controls it was a huge step forward not only for the series, but for the entire RPG genre. The level of immersion was astonishing at the time. Rich environments, wide-ranging dialog trees, and dynamic combat were all masterfully combined by a team that Lord British (Richard Garriott) led to create a game that can't be ignored by any cRPG fan.

The penultimate Ultima series

There will always be a debate on whether or not U4, U5 or the U7 parts make up the best Ultima story but for me, U7 has always been the crown jewel of the entire series. For starters, the technology leap in going from a small world window to a full screen was huge. Gone was the right panels that cluttered the screen and large text boxes that didn't need to be there after the conversation was done. In was a rich and interactive world that had an incredible story and a forward looking vision. This game has one of the richest stories for an RPG. The start of a new trilogy in the life of the Avatar, it turns the world of Britannia (and Serpent Isle) upside down. The virtues have been abandoned by the people, a new force is perverting Britannia and the side stories all help to enrich the coming battle between the Avatar and the Guardian. There is a lot of social commentary within the game which surprisingly enough still holds up almost 20 years later. No true RPG fan's collection would be complete without this game. It's sad they don't make games with this deep of a story today.

Still the best CRPG!

I've played every major CRPG since the mid 80s. Among them were excellent games which I've played hundreds of hours. Ultima VII wipes the floor with every one of them. Unmatched, still the best CRPG of all time. The mystery and atmosphere it unravels... no other game even comes close.

The best in the Ultima series

I remember playing this revolutionary game as a kid growing up in the 90's, it was probably one of the most addictive and captivating games alongside titles such as X-COM, Dune 2, Elder Scrolls 2, Master of Orion 2, Star Control 2, Wing Commander 2 and more. Sadly, so many games these days do exactly the opposite or fail to replicate that same stellar and memorable experience. Perhaps the gaming industry as a whole has reached a low point and needs a new breed of game developers brave enough to say no to the norm and go back to the roots of what made games so legendary and unforgettable. What this game lacks in graphics and sound (by today's standards), it more than made up for by its wide open sandbox environment where half the fun was simply interacting with the game world in ways that you will not find in many of today's games and the other half was following the main storyline and side quests. Rich in history and lore, I never ran out of places to explore or discover and there was danger aplenty every time I ventured out for adventure because I never knew what was out there from one day to the next. This was not a strictly linear and scripted game where you knew how many and what type of monster you were going to encounter. There were many long-forgotten ruins as you travelled the game world, just exploring and investigating them was rewarding and enjoyable as there was no detailed backstory to some of them and it left you to wonder and imagine what might have become of the inhabitants, who they were and what these ruins used to be before they fell victim to the ravages of time and nature. I could recall making a small cave by the hillside my permanent safe haven; I put a bedroll and a few other items there to make it feel more like home. Since you had to eat, drink and sleep in this game I would always go back there to rest and recover before going out again. Just some of the many memories I have of this masterpiece.

This Game Will Change Your Life

I've been a gamer a long time. Since '82. I cant possibly imagine a better game than this. If you are going through rough times, like all of us do, This game can be a huge comfort. This is not a game, but a world where you are the hero. You have to play this game as yourself and make the choices you would make. If games can be quantified as a fine vintage, than this would be priceless.
