One of my favourite RPGs
My first Ultima game was actually Ultima 6, which was also very good. But Ultima 7 is my favourite of the series due to it's level of detail and size. An example of this is that every npc not only had their own dialogue but they also had a routine, from waking up in the morning and eating breakfast. To going out to work, or do what they do, go to the tavern or visit a friend, before going to sleep at night. I was so impressed at the time, when i first played the game I used to follow them around and some would even have extra activities at night like serenading a sweetheart or seeing a secret lover. Combined with things like interactable objects for crafting (common places in modern survival games) it really made for an immersive feeling world. The plot for U7 was also quite interesting, not your typical fantasy tale and pretty dark in places. But the winning quality for me was that it offered a huge fantasy world with fauna and monsters, caves and dungeons to explore. And a very rich world in terms of lore with it's own history, religion and spiritual beliefs, though heavily inspired by real world religions. It has aged however, the UI though novel and bold for the time with its pop up windows and real time combat is clunky, with a bit more work it could have been like a proto diablo combat system, but it was awkward, i remember preferring the turn based combat from ultima 6 back then. I remember using save and reload quite a lot back in the day, to compensate for the jank. While the graphics, they were very good for the time but are dated now. I do plan to play through this whole game again soon though and I will be using Exult. To those newer to the series, i'd probably start from an earlier Ultima game, 4, 5 or 6. But i would recommend getting Ultima 7, provided you keep in mind it is a game from 1992, but also helped to further the crpg genre.
