Much better than you first think

I bought this game on its first release - went the whole hog with the special edition (complete with mini tabletop RPG manual), even bought the strategy guide! However, upon playing the game my excitement rapidly waned. The dialogue was dire. The voice acting was laughably abysmal. Character models you ask? Well don't. I barely managed half an hour before quitting. Fast forward 18 months... I found myself at a bit of a loose end with plenty of time to kill playing computer games. What perversity made me turn back to Two Worlds I don't know, but I'm glad I did, because underneath its shabby exterior lies a complete gem of a game. I normally have the attention span of a gnat with dementia, but this game got played through to the end (unlike Oblivion!), and I've returned to it many times since. Defintely worth the tiny cost it's now available for. I re-bought it on GOG after having DRM issues with my original copy - a very worthwhile investment! Go buy it, revel in the cheesy dialogue, and explore the world of Antaloor and it's many wonders! :D

Impressions of Two Worlds Epic Edition

As of writing this, I've beaten the game, gotten two (both?) endings, and have started a second playthrough. I haven't touched the DLC, so I won't be commenting on that. STORY/CHARACTERS Not much to say here. Characters are basic, and the story is too. There's a surprising amount of world building from dialogue, but I only found the world mildly interesting. MUSIC/SOUND Sound effects are servicable, and sometimes good. There's something quite satisfying about tearing through a horde of enemies and listening to a cascade of dying screams. I don't remember that much of the music, but I do like the ambient music and sounds. Battle music is a bit intense, but does what it should. COMBAT Combat is either steady and good-enough, or a janky nightmare. It's fine when you're just mashing attack while healing when necessary. However, jank is usually looming. It's possible to get knocked down repeatedly with no chance of escape, and if you take several hits at once, the game will briefly freeze and you'll be blasted with a flurry of blows the next second, often killing you. 1v1 fights are usually fine though, aside from the one-shots (which are common). OVERALL GAMEPLAY "unpolished" is probably the best word here. Max level skills are often situational at best. For instance, the torch skill only has a 48% chance of igniting an enemy at max level. Similarly with spells, there's a heal-over-time spell that only works when your weapon is sheathed (WHY?). The spells are also copy-pasted between schools often. I do have to praise the loot system though; the ability to combine pieces of equipment to make them stronger allows for more opportunities to "see numbers go up," and rarely leaves you with the feeling of "oh, it's just another +500 mega death blade. yawn." This might not sound like a 4/5 review, but I wanted to lay out some of the less attractive aspects for people. Be assured that I love this game, and I highly recommend it if you want an interesting experience.

Genuinely enjoyable

Very open world and it is good. The game is non-linear. Not much real choice in character type though. More RPG than action. No trouble finding appropriate difficulty opponents. Give me another year or two to forget it, and I'll play it again.

Story and the world is great but combat

I enjoyed the story and the world in the game. The combat is another story. It is very simple and easy. Had a great time with the game as the story and the world is great. I liked the way to upgrade your gear in the game. Graphics and sound/music works fine. Can easily recommend it.

Liked it more than Oblivion and Gothic

Two Worlds is an amazing, XBOX-era open world game which gets much right. I fell in love at a young age with Runescape's seemingly endless open world, where I spent hours traversing the arguably quite small free-to-play area. New cities were exciting, new dungeons and new loot could be found everywhere. I couldn't understand what the quests tried to achieve and I didn't care, I just followed the on-screen instructions leading me to new places. Two Worlds is exactly this, but larger, focusing on a vast open world with probably a hundred settlements, several hundred "points of interest" like graveyards, bandit camps, a surprisingly extremely varied combination of biomes and a huge potential for producing breathtaking vistas - something you wouldn't expect when looking at its otherwise quite bad looking up-close graphics. If you enter Two Worlds looking for breathtaking narrative, it ain't there. The narrative is written "in-character" for medieval times, which makes it iconic/laughable. Within a few hours it grew on me. All functionality you may expect from an open-world RPG is there, if only to check off a list of requirements for an open world. The whole experience as a result is one of genuine enjoyment when some aspect of the game is actually very well done. For example, I was surprised to find several optional quests in places far-off from the main roads with significant depth to them. In one instance, I had helped a necromancer get the rope from a gallows for his experiments, after which he asked me to test a doll which could kill groups of people in an instant. After completing both quests, he tasked me with getting more rope. As I went out into the world to find rope, the quest was marked "complete" and when I returned, to my surprise there was a guard outside who informed me that he was looking for the accomplice to a necromancer who was hanged for plotting against assassinating a ruler. Someone has put a lot of effort into some of these quests.
