Good release, good game

I finished it on hard after finishing Turok 1 on normal before reviewing. TL;DR In every way a better game than Turok 1. It has nice weapons and some of the more goofy mechanics like constantly respawning enemies have been dialed back, resulting in a much tighter FPS experience without the baggage of nintendo-like-platform-game design. Pros: + Weapons + FoV/modernized graphics/QoL features + Gory, nice kill animations Cons: - About half of levels are bad - Some annoying enemy types - Backtrack for keys offers no new challanges or rewards The biggest flaw is some mission design and objective placement are really bad, but first 2 levels are good. There's also a barely justified backtrack through all the levels before you are able to access the last boss. This port has some decent new features like highlighting objectives if you are close to them. This may help reduce some of the frustration of the levels that are badly designed, but still - prepare yourself to be lost at least a few times during Turok 2 as some of the key items or switches are hidden in a very hostile way. The best thing about it is again the weapon set. Some ammo types will have two different weapons using them, like the pistol and the more powerful mag pistol that consumes more ammo. The game does a good job to justify usage of both versions of same weapon, witch the exception of 2 (bow and melee - they have direct upgrades). One of the cooler weapons is a launcher that fires little floating drills that home in on a target, latch themselves onto it's skull and then explode after drilling in. Morbid, gruesome, awesome. While I barely recommended Turok 1, I can easily recommend the sequel. No need to play the original, the story isn't really connected.

It's a real (cerebral) bore.

I loved Turok 2 back in my N64 days. Unfortunately, the game was far too ambitious for the console. Even with the Expansion Pak, the game would often become a slideshow when there was too much action on screen. Now, almost 20 years later, we get a good (but currently flawed) remaster. All the weapons from the original Turok 2 are here, including the greatest weapon ever designed, the blissfully brutal Cerebral Bore. It still amazes me that more FPS games don't have a weapon like it. Best of all, NO FOG! If you've played Turok 1, you know what I'm talking about. If you like violent, retro shooters definitely grab Turok 2. the game's performance at the time of this review isn't perfect, but hopefully, Night Dive will patch in some fixes.

Classic

When I was 10 or 11 I never completed any level of this game and even today I needed to check the web to finish the first level. If there wasnt a master cheatcode I wouldnt have seen much anything of the game. I even remembered the code.. I only had the german cut version back then, without any blood. Jesus if I imagine I would have played THIS version instead, wow, tripple the fun I would have had.

The Remaster Turok Deserves

This remaster has kept the sound, feel and look of the original but with some rough edges smoothed other thanks to modern rendering techniques. The motion blur, anisotropic filtering and lighting effects along with widescreen resolution support mean this game can be played in a way that really does credit to the original. While the textures remain the same as before, and the game is essentially the same, it feels so much better to play. Finally, a pc port of the original turoks that doesn't feel like a cheap and nasty rush. I would know because I used to own the original pc port. This plays far better and I cannot recommend this enough to turok fans.

Prime of Nostalgia

I didn't play Turok 2 back when it came out, if I had to base my opinion about the game putting into perspective when it originally released, I would have to base it off of people's comments towards the game at the time. Most of them were positive, it recieved critical acclaim and was held by many, and it is even held by many, to this day, as one of the best first person shooters ever made. Sadly, as it usually happens, the standards, and norms that were present for video games inside the industry back then, aren't the same ones that are present right now. As an end result, the game ends up feeling dated, despite Night Dive studios greatest effort to "modernize" an old classic. The game looks as pristine as it can be, no more fog to cover the vistas that spread across the horizon, wonderful post processing effects to give the ilussion of a current release, or remaster, that work fairly well in creating such a representation. Fantastic and fast paced gameplay that now I can see how influential it ended up being, from Quake, to even Unreal, and Halo. Multiple secrets, violence galore, endless replayability... Terrible, and oudated, level design. The biggest issue about this game is how long the levels are, and the fact that you are required to complete random objectives in order to complete each of the levels, whilst also making sure you collect every key, and collectible as you go along. Miss one of the objectives, and by the end of the level you're thrown at the start to play the level again with less enemies than before, in order to complete the mandatory random objective that you missed in order to continue to the next level. The keys are required to open future levels as well. The placement of all of this things is cryptic and quite complex, it is fairly difficult after a while to get most of the things you need by just playing the game naturally and I would have to recommend you to play this game with a guide in hand. This hurt the game for me.
