The Lost Land...

A world where time has no meaning - and evil knows no bounds. Torn from a world long gone, the time traveling warrior Turok has found himself thrust into a savage land torn by conflict. An evil overlord known as 'The Campaigner' seeks to shred the fabric of time and rule the universe using an ancient artifact known as 'The Chronoscepter'. The Chronoscepter was shattered thousands of years ago in an effort to keep it from falling into evil hands. The Campaigner has constructed a massive focusing array which he plans to use to magnify and pervert the power of the Chronoscepter in order to shatter the barriers between the ages and rule the universe. Turok has vowed to find the eight pieces of the Chronoscepter spread throughout the Lost Land and put an end to The Campaigner's evil plot...

Content changes and pricing

Turok was my first FPS on my first crappy computer, so for me it's about nostalgia and memories. The features added by this remake are options to play in widescreen HD resolutions, options to use antialiasing, new and more special effects, as well as gameplay options and better controls. Sadly enough, these improvements aren't Night Dive Studios doing, it's originally done by the same person that did Doom 64 EX, which is also stated in other reviews on GOG.com. I definitely enjoy the game with the new features available. However, there's one massive problem. The levels are NOT the same they were in the original release, there have been changes! Level layout, pathfinding, hidden and secret areas as well as key locations. The changes are minor and subtle most of the time, plus only small portions of the game are affected, but still! It is very important to me to state that this remake IS NOT THE EXACT SAME GAME AS THE ORIGINAL! Despite some of the less detailed reviews posted here. Be aware of that! The changes came to my attention because I was looking for a specific hidden area in the very first level about five to ten minutes into the game, where you can get an automated shotgun by climbing a dark section of wall within a small ravine that doesn't look climbable at first. That spot doesn't exist in the remake version, instead they added a completely new open area with a ruin, some water and a switch, plus a new, more obvious hidden area with the same reward, an automatic shotgun, right there. Now, since the original release version is still available as abandonware that can be run even on Windows 7 (can't tell if the legal situation changes because of the release of this remake now) and since the levels in the remake were changed compared to the original, I don't think 20 bucks is an acceptable price. Around ten bucks or below would be fine. I rate the remake three stars with the offer and the background as it is. Best regards

Not Quite

Some improvement in graphics, no fog, as others mentioned, but the difficulty setting seems broken and set to hard or worse. Less ammo and map-changes, minor but iconic to the original game: sadly miss the hidden keys on lofts that were not difficult that the original included. Polished but unbalanced, and with the infamous checkpoint save system made for too hard a ride. I reinstalled the original after 20 years, so thanks to GOG for only the reminder. Lol. 3 stars otherwise, and maybe the difficulty is a glitch others do not mind or will not effect their system. Buy only on sale too, the price is too high even with no problem.

Fun romp

Turok is from a time when expectations towards an FPS were different. You play as Turok, a guy we know nothing about, aside from his uncanny ability to run at ludicrous speeds, and even faster when going diagonally. The only line ever uttered by the protagonist is "I AM TUROK!," and the game never goes beyond this state of mind. Not even an attempt at providing a story or purpose for what you're doing is made, and frankly, this is not to the game's detriment. Turok scores where it really matters: the levels are vast and intricate, enemies plentiful, and the weapon roster is extensive to where you'll quickly run out of keys on your keyboard. Turok uses a hub-based level system, meaning you get to to travel to each level from a central hub, and in order to unlock new ones you need to collect keys. These are sometimes more and sometimes less well hidden, though the automap is quite helpful in finding one's way through the levels. Aside from shooting humaoids, dinosaurs, and alien creatures, one also gets to do a decent bit of platforming, which can be nerve-recking at times, albeit in a good way, as the game uses a checkpoint/save station system. In terms of difficulty, the game is somewhat unbalanced. Normal can be beaten without any effort, to where losing health becomes harder than filling it up again. Hard on the other hand quickly becomes stressful, since several hitscan enemies can empty one's health bar in seconds, and once you run out of lives it's game over, not to mention that enemies respawn quickly while ammo does not. In addition, some mechanics such as maximum health increases are not present on hard difficulty at all, making things even trickier. Thankfully, the game allows changing the difficulty at any time, so one can start on hard and switch to normal during the tougher parts no problem. The remaster by Nightdive is excellent as always. The original aesthetic is preserved, and the game runs great throughout. All in all, an easy recommendation.

The classic live again!

Loved playing on N64 and still holds true today. Controls feel good and works on start with no configure with xbox controllers. Default controllers are great too

Good game, like the original

Couple differences between the n64 and PC; no toggle run/walk and some level design differences; otherwise plays as well as I remember.
