Torment: Tides of Numenera - Legacy Edition

You are born falling from orbit, a new mind in a body once occupied by the Changing God, a being who has cheated death for millennia. If you survive, your journey through the Ninth World will only get stranger… and deadlier.

With a host of strange companions – whose motives and goals may help or harm you – you must escape an ancient, unstoppable creature called the Sorrow and answer the question that defines your existence: What does one life matter?

Torment: Tides of Numenera is the thematic successor to Planescape: Torment, one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved role-playing games of all time. Torment: Tides of Numenera is a single-player, isometric, narrative-driven role-playing game set in Monte Cook’s Numenera universe, and brought to you by the creative team behind Planescape: Torment and the award-winning Wasteland 2.
  • A Deep, Thematically Satisfying Story. The philosophical underpinnings of Torment drive the game, both mechanically and narratively. Your words, choices, and actions are your primary weapons.
  • A World Unlike Any Other. Journey across the Ninth World, a fantastic, original setting, with awe-inspiring visuals, offbeat and unpredictable items to use in and out of battle, and stunning feats of magic. Powered by technology used in the award-winning Pillars of Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment, the Numenera setting by Monte Cook provides endless wonders and impossibly imaginative locations for you to explore.
  • A Rich, Personal Narrative. Thoughtful and character-driven, the story is epic in feel but deeply personal in substance, with nontraditional characters and companions whose motivations and desires shape their actions throughout the game.
  • Reactivity, Replayability, and the Tides. Your choices matter, and morality in the Ninth World is not a simple matter of “right” and “wrong”. You will decide the fates of those around you, and characters will react to your decisions and reputation. The result is a deeply replayable experience that arises naturally from your actions throughout the game.
  • A New Take on Combat. With the Crisis system, combat is more than just bashing your enemies. Plan your way through hand-crafted set-pieces which combine battles with environmental puzzles, social interaction, stealth, and more.

Worthy successor (?)

Only about 10 hours in, but so far this seems to live up to its mighty predecessor. The writing is absolutely top-notch, and the setting is intriguing, poetic and beautifully realised. My only gripe so far is that the plotline (nameless revenant protagonist accosted by old acquaintances and assailed by memories of past lives, etc.) feels almost like a retread: Planescape Torment with lasers. But I trust it to diverge in compelling ways...

A novices point of view

am 76 years old and have not played an adventure type game since Atari some 30 or 35 years ago. Now that I am retired I wanted to see if I could take on a more current adventure game. I had heard about Torment and so tried to see if I could handle it. At first I was skeptical and afraid I couldn't play a game of this nature. Not having read on anything describing the "how-to" it was an interesting challenge upon entering the Ninth World. However, as the game progressed, I was able to not only learn how to tackle Torment but adventure games of this nature in general - for example, click on everything and everyone in an area to get as much information as possible. Torment, although complex, is reasonably straightforward, even for an old wannabe gamer who wanted to see if he still had it in him. Once I got deeper into Torment I was hooked and spent many hours enjoying the various aspects of it and learning more. So this is the perspective of a non-gamer and not a pro-gamer. Torment is reasonably straightforward but is sufficiently seducing to make you want to play more. The only caution is that the game is addicting and soon many hours will pass by as the Torment:Tides of Numenera unfold.

Good Enough

I'm on my second playthrough, expecting to do 3 minimum. Lot's of reading, thought provoking, without stuffing one "political" leaning, or another, down your throat. Which given this "modern" age is quite refreshing. Worth what I spent on it, but it seems too short. I had no expectations, I've played planescape, this is not a sequel, or a redo, it's a completely different thing set in the general universe. I'm judging it purely on it's own merits, not by comparing it to planescape. Two different animals. A lot of complaints, most of which seem like complaining for the sake of it. Some are legit, but most are preference oriented. Personally I'm just glad to have some scant few devs left who don't take your money then shovel hours of p.c. political junk down your throat til your eyes are bleeding and you are babeling in old orcish.

Disappointing, doesn't inspire

Considering how much money they had from the kickstarter and how long it took them to deliver, I expected better. To me it was disjointed adventure, more puzzle/conversation solving than RPG. The parentage of Planescape was there, some of the concepts were innovative but the story and non-connections of side quests to anything you cared about was heart rendering. Again considering all the money raised, why was the length so short, were was a dlc, director's cut or modability (failing in other Inxile games also). Glad I only funded for $20.

Wow.

I love Baldur's Gate and Pillars of Eternity. I saw Torment Tides and thought to myself, "This is too weird. What's with all the technology and alien stuff. Where are the elves and all that?" Well I gave it a try... this is unbelievable. I've never been so captivated by another world before. EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT. If you enjoyed Myst and Riven, you'll love this. If you have an imagination, you'll love this. Holy crap.
