I think it's time to say goodbye to GoG; I am sick and tired of the litany of utterly broken games they shovel on their storefront; it is clear 0 effort was made to ensure the game would work properly on modern systems. Utterly unacceptable.
The concept and most of the implementation is good. The planning works, the guns work, the equipment works. You know what does not work? The AI.
The enemy AI is great. I once saw one guy calmly walk up to three of my squadmates and took his time executing them while they stared at a wall. I ended up just instructing them to carry equipment and give me cover since they would just keep dying. They make absolutely no attempt to react to a threat. They will gladly walk by a door that had several of their squadmates die in front of.
The enemy AI has great aim and will execute hostages at a drop of a hat no matter how many less-than-lethal grenades you chuck at them. There was one point where I literally had to no clip through the wall because one terrorist would kill a hostage no matter what I tried.
If you don't mind filling in for your squadmates, then this is not a bad tactical FPS. Personally, I think SWAT 4 did it best.
This game is still being played online at www.voobly.com . Its still one of the best multi-player/scrimaging games out there. There is also a sweet new ladder with a ranking system like CoD as well as the old ladders we all love at www.myrainbowsix.com . Check it out!
Based on the novel "Rainbow Six" by Tom Clancy, Red Storm reinvents the books in way that is not only more entertaining(arguably) but also gives a better and unique perspective on the novel itself. Some bits and pieces were added in for extra flare and to give the game a longer life. But at the end of all this you have a really well done game. Tactically rich and full of replay value, tagged along with meticulous and methodical strategy, this game is #1 when it comes to the FPS genre. While not boasting with graphic fidelity or boundary pushing polygonal design, the simplicity of this games look doesn't matter too much when you have gameplay with more depth and complexity than modern shooters. I've played many games in the Battlefield and Call of Duty series, but after maybe 2 to 3 hours the monotonous of both these series shine through. Bland, uninteresting, and often the same copy/paste action. Rainbow Six(1998) actually provides a unique challenge and offers more strategy to the player, you can create an action plan before each mission, create rally points or points for command and engagement, etc. The game also focuses heavily on real world scenarios that take clear thinking before playing. This is not a game where you go in guns hot and have reckless misfortune, time matters and careful execution is key. One slight mistake can lead to a bomb exploding, a hostage dying, or the VIP of the mission escaping. Suppressors and equipment DO matter. You don't know how many FPS games these days provide the player with grade A equipment, but it doesn't truly matter if you have the gun skill of a pro. Here, all you really need is patience and brain power to carry out the mission. 20 years strong, this game still holds true to being one of the best games ever made. A game deserving of a remaster, but has been long forgotten by players. I'm only 22 as i write this, i've played all versions. But the PC is the best. All missions and better UI. Definitely a most own game. :)
As others have said before, disappearing characters, invisible walls, over sensitive mouse and the likes ruin the experience unfortunately. I was really happy to be able to play this N64 classic again after all these years and it's very nice when it works but on some missions it is just borderline unplayable...
