Dr. Eva Rosalene and Dr. Neil Watts have rather odd jobs: they give dying people another chance to live. Literally. Using a technology that allows artificial memories to be implanted, the doctors can weave and transform the mind of a patient to help them live the life they wanted to live...
To The Moon follows Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts' attempt to fulfill the wishes of a dying elderly man, Johnny. In their attempt to do so, they travel deep through the man's memories, unfolding his curious life story before their eyes. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny's past is revealed. As the two doctors piece together the fragmented events that spanned a lifetime, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish.
Johnny's last wish is, of course, to go to the moon.

It's kinda refreshing to see a game that knows what it wants to be, what it wants to accomplish, and then it goes and does that without many silly extra's on the side.
To The Moon accomplishes that completely and wholeheartedly. It does what it wants to do, and doesn't bog itself down with unnecessary extra's.

More of an interactive story than a typical game (exploration and point and click puzzle solving are present but no the main driving force) but a great one nonetheless. A good mix of humor and emotional dialogue keep you going through the story which progresses in a Memento like fashion. It is quite short (4 hrs give or take) but worth it. Few works of fiction have moved my cynical self and even fewer made me care, this one made me shed some tears.
Expectations are narrow. We think so little of the possibilities of a medium to originally convey an experience that we come up with genres for easy classification. "FPS" is nothing more than Wolfenstein 3D and every clone to follow in its footsteps. Outside of a dozen simplified categories, players don't know how to deal with what they're seeing. "I like Strategy and RPG, but not Puzzle, FPS and Sports." Have I played all games in every category to know that there are no exceptions? No, but my brain is lazy, so I stereotype.
The closest mindless match here would be the traditionally Japanese game classification of Visual Novel, where you click a button instead of flicking your finger to turn a page, but when the settings are more appealing, and the soundtrack is far more breathtaking, you have something closer to a movie where events unfold at your own pace. The constant requirement for minimal interaction to advance the story keeps your mind awake and attentive enough that salient details don't get missed, and in To The Moon, there are a lot of details to track.
This is a story that's close to a poem.
It's a damned good one.
Buy it without expectations other than a highly emotional experience, because that's what you're going to get.
I am not much of an adventure game fan. I like mostly RPG and strategy games. That being said, this was one I actually liked playing
Pros:
No silly inventory management or having to combine items as is par for the course in adventure games. No pixel hunting. When you mover your cursor over an item in a location, cursor changes to tell you it is something that you need to take or use.
Cons:
Could have been longer.
There is only one type of puzzle in the game.
This is more of a interactive story with characters that have some depth, rather than just a pixel hunt, track and backtrack until you find what you need, like with most other adventure games.
