    Description
Through the Woods is a third-person Norse horror adventure set in a forest on the western shores of Norway that tells the story of a mother and her missing son. Through reactive narration, the player experiences the mother’s re-telling of the events surrounding her son’s disappearance. Players follow the path of a terrified woman who has forced herself to enter this terrible place for the sole purpose of finding her son, in a setting heavily influenced by Norse mythology and Norwegian folk tales.

With Through the Woods, Antagonist have captured the feeling of the forest as they saw it as children, with all the fear and mystery that comes from roaming through it alone. This is coupled with a powerful story and high quality sound design, which in the darkness of the forest becomes a core mechanic. Through the Woods is a profound experience that directly delivers the feelings of loneliness and loss in a terrifying place...
    • Explore stunning environments and experience stories inspired by Norse mythology, Norwegian art and nature
    • Uncover dark tales of the past and present through reactive narration
    • Creative use of light and darkness generates deceptive environments
    • A frightening journey accompanied by beautiful and grim sound design

Solid horror game with a great story

This game is a very pleasant surprise. It's from a small team and it shows through some rough edges. A missing texture here and there, mediocre animation quality and a couple models that need more polish. That is where the negatives end, but I will mention that the voice acting is obviously done by non-native english speakers, though this personally didn't bother me and for the most part the protagonist's english is quite good. Now. I must say this game is pretty amazing. For a horror game, there are NO JUMP SCARES. Instead this is a game that intends to build tension and keep the momentum going. There is a lot of cool world building here and the game works off of Norse mythology for its story, characters and monsters. I will not spoil the kind of monsters that you will run into in this game but they are pretty damn cool and some of the designs are really neat. The sound design is also top notch, and easily one of the best things about the game. The cycle the gameplay goes through is like this: Wonder through a new area, maybe a village or something searching for notes or collectibles that shed some extra light on what is happening or foreshadow what you might come up against next. Then you will run into something (or it will happen upon you) and you will be forced to find a way to either hide from it or make it go away forcibly. And then the cycle repeats. Basically a small respite between threats. Compared to other horror games like say, Amnesia or Outlast, This game isn't quite as scary and I don't think it's trying to be. The game seems to be more into having a surreal nature about it and building dread in the player than having you running for your life. Running for your life would actually probably kill you :p Anyway, the game is a gem for the genre and I enjoyed my time with the game certainly more than I thought I would. You won't likely be dissapointed if you enjoy these types of games.

    Beautiful but frustrating

First I just want to say this game is absolutely gorgeous; it's no wonder it won awards for sound design. The environments are very immersive. I had a lot of fun exploring. However, it didn't take long until I found myself frustrated by the appearance of NPCs that made it nearly impossible for me to move forward. I desperately wanted to continue on but the tedious mechanics of some encounters just made me feel like it wasn't worth it and I eventually gave up. The setting was so entrancing that I had wanted to explore leisurely, letting my own imagination create fear and anxiety, instead I was faced with having to race through areas without a second glance. Another reviewer compared this to Ethan Carter and there are definite similarities in mood, but once you get far enough the game becomes like the mines of Ethan Carter at a much higher difficulty level and with a higher penalty, very frustrating.

    Gorgeous but disappointing

Ok..the first 15 mins of the game is good (probably the rest too), the graphics are gorgeous, but the voice-acting totally blows. I am a Norwegian and this is embarrassing. Im sorry to say that I can't play it any more. It's actual Norwegians speaking english, and not that good. Even in norwegian the voice-acting is terrible. The actors sounds like someone is forcing them to do the voice-over, with no devotion to the characters at all. With proper voice-over this could really have been something. The game itself looks beautiful and I really enjoy games with this kind of perspective (3rd person / over the shoulder-horror-style). It has Norse mythology, and our Norwegian folktales. It really could have been something.

    Sometimes Brilliant, but Uneven

Pros : + Great Atmosphere + Compelling Story & good pacing + Doesn't overstay it's welcome (~4 hrs) + Some brilliant "WTF" moments + Monsters are modelled and animated well + A bunch of subtle creepy moments (my favorite part) Cons : - Lacks the level of visual polish you'd expect - Main character Voiceover (not as bad as other reviews led me to believe, but felt a little hack) (English) - Uneven presentation (some parts feel really great, others seem hastily thought out) - Human character models feel stiff and lifeless All in all I enjoyed my playthrough. Sometimes this feels like a mod of another game, sometimes like a brilliant indie title. I recommend it for anyone that enjoys story driven experiences & can complete it in a sitting or two.

    It gets you

I am a fan of Old Norse mythology. This is something of a Walking Simulator, however the pace is much faster than your regular Dear Ester ripoff and it is much more about immersion, rather than fear factor (Amnesia). There is no combat. But that is a good thing. From what I have heard about this game, I did not have my hopes up. However, there is a moment where you meet two siblings that are actively mocking you and trying to catch you, where I was not regretting my purchase. It was excellent. This is not exactly Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. But it is scratches the same itch. I do not regret my purchase and would love to see more from these developers.
