Thronebreaker is a single player role-playing game set in the world of The Witcher that combines narrative-driven exploration with unique puzzles and card battle mechanics.
Crafted by the developers responsible for some of the most iconic moments in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the game spins a truly regal tale of Meve, a war-veteran and queen of two Northern Realms — Lyria and Rivia. Facing an imminent Nilfgaardian invasion, Meve is forced to once again enter the warpath and set out on a dark journey of destruction and revenge.

I love the way the story is told. The narration in English is excellent with a lot of accent.
The puzzles are very interesting and short.
The upgrade system keeps it interesting and the story provides changes to that too.
The user interface is excellent and flawless!
Currently playing this on my Nintendo Switch aswell as owning it on PC, and I have to say - this game is an absolute delight. I did not expect so much content and only went into it wanting to improve upon my 'new gwent' skills, but found the story to be such a blockbuster.
The animation, the music, the story, the characters, the lore, the puzzles, the destinations - all of it is five star. If you are a Witcher fan but not so much a Gwent fan, the lower diffulties at least will allow you to skip battles entirely without any punishment. Allowing you to still dive into the world and go on a fantastic adventure with Queen Meveand her associates.
This is a must buy, seriously.
I haven't been through the whole story while writing this but I have to say this is much more than I thought. I am not really fond of card games, so I never really enjoyed the Gwent part of W3 neither. But the way CDPR crafted the story around this game is astonishing. Every game is different, a lot of special rules where you have to puzzle your way out of the match. It's really fun and the story telling reminds me of audio narrated comics. Incredible well done. I am half through and got almost 30h gametime already!
What a great experience.
I originally bought Thronebreaker simply because I wanted to get some extra stuff for my Gwent online but boy... I wasn't expecting this!
Without spoiling anything and to keep it concise:
- The story is great with impeccable writing and great voice acting. Meve and Gascon were my favs as well as Brouver Hoog :-)
- Game presents factions and world's lore in a very neat way immersing you into the Witcher's ecosystem gradually.
- Choices, when presented, are tough to made and have consequences too (in some occasions... so pick well!)
- Battles are.. well.. Gwent. So if you like that type of card mechanics you won't be disappointed. Just a minor note: cards here have different stats and powers compared to the online version of Gwent (they're more buffed up).
- Puzzles are ok. A few of them are interesting, majority are ok, while others, just boring.
- Game has a resource system which allows you to forge cards and include more in your deck as well as upgrade your "army". Be careful on how you spend them cause it's not that you'll be swimming in those!
- One complain I have is the speed with which Meve moves around the map. That create a very slow and tedious sense of progression, but you can enhance her speed by using resources you collect in the maps.
- Sound effects and musics are great. Probably there are one or two I didn't like too much but overall, very solid sountrack
- Loved the artstyle.
- Nice drops for Gwent online (avatars, frames, cards, etc.)
TB is a game which kept me glued to the monitor, got me exulting and infuriating at times. Definitely looking forward to another chapter of this series.
Highly recommended.
I got into card games with Hearthstone, moved on to Magic and sadly had to shelve them as they are money sinks I just can not keep up with. So for this game to come out with no strings attached, a wide variety of cards to collect, opponents/puzzles that are challenging enough to keep me on my toes, and the wonderful authentic world of The Witcher here. I am delighted by this game.
It's a glowing recommendation for me. It's certainly not going to be for all fans. Gwent here has much more depth and variety than that of the Wild Hunt, it's also far more challenging to wrap your head around. If you don't like card games, finding synergies and cracking puzzles; this game isn't for you. If that sounds like fun to you then by all means jump in. I also should point out that I do not partake in the free to play Gwent that was released some time ago and I do not feel as though it is a requirement to enjoy Thronebreaker to it's fullest.
