Become the real thief. Steal in free roam sandbox neighborhoods. Observe your target and gather information that will help you with the burglary. Take the challenge and rob the best secured houses. Buy some hi-tech burglar equipment and learn new thief tricks. Sell stolen goods to the passers. Do anything that a real thief does!
A good thief always observes his target. What's inside? Who lives there? What's your target day schedule? Find out when the house is empty and does it have nosy neighbours. Choose from lots of possible approaches to prepare the best plan. Many modern devices available in Thief Simulator might come in handy with gathering intel about your target and it's neighbourhood.
The faster, the better. Find and steal as many valuables as possible in the shortest time possible. Remember that infinite backpacks don't exist. When it's about time you have to maintain cold blood. In every house you'll find tons of useless stuff, which can really slow you down. If you're not sure that you can take some serious money for it, maybe a good idea would be to leave it behind and save space for some expensive goods. If you fill your backpack with worthless items, you may have to waste your time to throw stuff out just to make space for other things. Be careful, cause some things can draw police attention to you!
A real, experienced thief can spot places where there's most probability of finding some valuables on the fly. Use the flashlight at night to highlight all the valuables in sight and places where you can expect them to be.
Disassemble a stolen car and sell parts on the internet. Prepare phones and tablets before selling them in a pawn shop by removing their security.
Look around for any useful items. They will save you some time on lockpicking or hacking. Key near a window or purchase receipts in trash bins. All those things can make life of an aspiring thief so much easier and reduce your burglary time even by a half. Of course many of them are just useless trash... Or maybe they aren't?
Be careful! In some houses you can meet unexpected guests. If they catch you in the act, they will call the police. In this case hide and wait till they stop looking for you or you can always leave the loot and run away as fast as possible.

Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
besides the mouse being to sensitive from the start. this game is great well worth the 20 bucks. driving disasembling cars security systems. fun not overly serious. and the story is ok and gives you a general idea of what to do. but you can do as you see fit.
I bought this game on GOG sale and now I have seen GOG version is 1.7.1.5 but on Steam there is version 1.8 with 2 available DLCs (Luxury Houses, Shopping Center).
When GOG version will be updated to 1.8?
When GOG customers will get DLCs?
Very great game but some disadvantages for GOG customers (no latest version, no DLCs...)
I have written to developer playway but no answer...
Why GOG version have no patch 1.8 & DLCs???
When I first played it, I thought it only had the first neighbourhood to play in, but I was pleasantly surprised there actually is more to this game.
Relating to "being abandonned by devs" reviews, it's not the case really. Updates for GOG version are realesing, just some time after Steam version ones. I'm only speculating, but PlayWay may have some agreement with Valve that their Thief Simulator games (and their other games maybe) are getting updates and DLCs to Steam versions earlier than here, on GOG.
Unlike many games with "Simulation" in its title, this one genuinely tries to be a good game. It's very rough in some spots, but there's clearly a lot of effort put in. If you can get past the premise of playing as a criminal, it's quite a lot of fun despite its issues.
As you've surely realized, you play as a thief. Your goal is to steal stuff and sell it to people who don't ask questions for a profit, so you can improve your toolset and be able to steal more and better stuff.
The story is just basically an excuse. You can nearly entirely ignore it. As far as I know it's only needed to unlock the other neighborhoods, but since story-mandated goals are simple and unintrusive you can easily go through them as you play.
While the basic game might look simplistic at first, it grows in complexity without ever feeling complicated. Breaking in a house at first is as simple as casing a place to know when the owners are out and breaking a window or sneaking through the back door with a lockpick. But things get increasingly complicated: windows start getting alarms, doors start getting stronger locks, some owners never leave the house, cameras and security guards start showing up, fences start getting taller, etc. So you need to start using better tools and learn newer tactics.
Stealth is key. The stealthier you are, the better your rewards. You can escape if you trigger an alarm or someone sees you, but if you're undetected you'll reap better results. Coming back to a house later will have some items be replaced, but others not. The more expensive stuff doesn't get replaced, so if you sell it to the wrong guy you'll lose a lot of profit.
The game's main issue is that it's a bit janky. Some control and design issues needed more time in the oven. Hopefully the announced sequel will address them. Despite its flaws, it's quite a fun experience and I recommend it.
