I remember first playing The Thing on my old PS2 way back when. It was a good game back then. This remaster makes it a good game now! Some of the controls can be a little clumsy, but nothing too horrible. If you like both movies of The Thing, give this game a try!
Never played the original version but it was clearly ahead of it's time with it's companion mechanics and other cmplex gameplay. I love games like these cause challenge really adds even more tension to the horror elements. I also like the lock-on aiming system for guns, There is some aiming but this is more of a survival horror game than a shooter. Which I am more than ok with because I am getting sick of simple first and third person shooters where all you need is good aim to win. Anyway this is a must play if you like the movie, you even get to see all the most iconic rooms from the movie within the first hour and thirty minutes. Only potential downsides are things that you should expect with an old game like voice acting thats not really up to current standards but for me personally I even like that aspect it's charming in a slightly cheesy kind of way. So it gets a nine out of ten from me.
As a fan of the film and having played the original Xbox release of 'The Thing', I was both surprised and interested when I heard a remake was happening. Reviews after release were largely positive and I was most happy to hear they "fixed" the broken scripted nature of squadmates turning. Now I pick it up, start playing and find the latter is only a half truth and the core issues that kept it firmly planted as a mildly decent budget title still remain all these years later.
Bottom line? This isn't worth $30+ and a revisit for those who've already played it.
Graphics get a bump, but we're talking more of a clean-up job than visual revolution. The sound design remains the same as I remember it. Decent voicework, sound effects, but nothing stellar. Gameplay is still the simple mix of staying alive and light inventory management. Rather flat characters in a story that somehow manages to be predictable and go off the rails near the end.
If you've read this far and didn't play this title the first time around and/or are a big fan of the 1982 pic then don't let me stop you from picking this up. Might I recommend waiting until it's on sale though. For those who've already given it a playthrough know the squadmate "fix" means some still turn in the same spots due to plot and the others are forced to panic and kill you or themselves instead. Hardly a real fix. Take the high review scores with a grain of salt and know it's nostalgia or FOMO because of the movie. Not because this is a world class remake.
I always enjoy having to experience games like this from an era where people made what they wanted out of passion. Having never experienced this but also being a fan of the movie, Computer Artworks did a pretty good job taking the aesthetics and mechanics of the movie and turning it into a competant game.
When I saw that this game will be available to play with better controllers I was really happy, for my worth the price and time, I been playing for a while and I'm loving it, recommend for those who like alien/horror/action games!
