The Outer Worlds is an award-winning single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.
Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
KEY FEATURES
The player-driven story RPG
In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
You can be flawed, in a good way
New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
Lead your companions
During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
Explore the corporate colony
Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.
This is not a review of gameplay per se since I will not be playing the game. The game does not allow key remapping which is often essential for those of us with physical limitations. This oversight might be forgivable in a game from a small Developer like Chucklefish but... oh wait, Stardew Valley does have key remapping. But not Outer Worlds. Which cost twice as much. Ass holes.
+ nice cast of followers and characters
+ tons of sarcasm, satire and black humor
+ great main and side quests with lots of choices and consequences
+ nice art style and sci-fi setting
- short
- mediocre combat
- traversing the world is damn boring
- loot and skill systems are tedious and confusing
- doesn't run very well
- some pesky bugs
If you're looking for an action RPG, this game won't cut it.
If you're looking for an old school sci-fi RPG focused on lore, characters and story, look no further.
Don't buy it at full price tho, TOW isn't worth 60€.
I believe to truly experience this game, you need to go through the dlc, but anyway. I have the game on steam. It's a nice experience, there's lots to do. I'd buy it on a sale such as now the 50% off is great.
The weapons feel great, loved the ability to upgrade them, there's some fun builds out there that I suggest checking out.
As a space adventure it works, kinda gave me a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe when I traveled with my crew. However, playing solo was okay, nothing too special. You do have perks you can choose to make playing solo worth your time, tho. So the game system allows you to be flexible, and play however you want.
There's even a dumb-path, where your intellect is low, so you get to say the dumbest stuff.
I give it a 4 stars, because to me, its nearly perfect. I just wish there was more in the basic product, but yeah with the dlc it's a better experience.
Really wanted to love this game, it looks great, the universe it's set in is fabulous but it's just a facade for a pretty dull game which treads groudn that many many others do far better.
This is the playabillity / likeability / fun-factor that in-dev games such as Starfield need to aspire to emulate. If their games don't arrive, even after over a decade in early access, I won't play them.
