The Outer Worlds is an award-winning single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.
Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
KEY FEATURES
The player-driven story RPG
In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
You can be flawed, in a good way
New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
Lead your companions
During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
Explore the corporate colony
Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.
From an RPG perspective it wasn't very engaging, it felt like Fischer Price My First RPG. The choices didn't feel like it had any substance, the gameplay was also very rudimentary. The writing felt so forced and contrived that I did not care about anyone. I made it off the first planet and just gave up because I felt like I saw everything the game had to offer. I wouldn't recommend this even if you're hard up for an RPG, I gave this two stars because the price was right and the game worked out of the box.
I am really confused as to where I should put my score. Sometimes the game is great other times it is awful.
The writing is the greatest example of this, sometimes you will have deep meaningful writing that could be considered an interesting commentary of corporatism and extremism. But mostly it will be either shallow, boring or schizophrenic.
Sometimes characters will be interesting multifaceted characters with understandable motives, occansionally they will be caricatures that add to the story and tells you about the world. Mostly they will be caricatures that rip you out of the experience or less multifaceted and more incoherent psychopaths.
The combat is uninspired on lower difficulties but passable.
The loot system is more meh than anything, I never found any good reason to not just go highest DPS and armor then plow my way through. Maybe that is better in higher difficulties, I played on normal and never needed to use more than you standard quick health potion/inhaler.
The world is beautiful in my opinion a bit over saturated but it gives it a really unique look and feeling, even if that means it might be grating on your eyes occasionally.
Managed to play 20 hours before I simply got bored. It's ok, which for Obsidian standards is very disappointing. The game really takes itself being not serious too seriously.
The Outer Worlds is, at best, a game you'll play through once and forget about.
Tim Cain (one of the two diriectors) is not one of the brightest minds to come out of Obsidian. One of the more unfortunate parts of his sycophancy towards Bethesda is in how this attitude has affected his own ability to design and create games - Of which Outer Worlds is a clear casualty, playing like an even less substantial clone of Fallout 4 (Which itself is barren in many ways).
The visuals are nice, even beautiful, but - So what?
Pretty, boring games are in a great surplus, and have been for a long time. Even then, the visual design isn't outstanding in itself; Empty streets and generic, sweeping landscapes, only supported by the quality of models.
As for mediocrities, this game has a lot.
The writing is unenthusiastic. The gunplay is unsubstantial. Quests are straightforward and uninteresting. Commentary is barely a thought deep. Trudging around the landscape is a way to kill time, and not a pleasure. Enemies aren't fun to fight. The world isn't enthusing to be a part of. Nothing in the Outer Worlds is engaging.
Yet, none of these problems alone seem to explain just how lazy and soulless this game is. Outer Worlds is filled with forgettable components, and yet, the absence of any reason for existing seems so much more grating than that. This game has all the emotional backing of somebody squeezing out past glories they've taken part in, hoping to regain a lost sense of self-esteem.
If you're going to market your game by riding the coat-tails of something great, you'd better be prepared to follow through. Outer Worlds does not, in any way worth considering.
It might not be shockingly awful to play, but the sheer dullness means there's really no reason in the world to buy this game.
There's nothing really wrong with The Outer Worlds, the main problem is it doesn't do anything well. I found the story and characters to be extremely boring. The humour is very flat and safe.
The RPG mechanics and game play are shallow. There's little variety in gear other than some science weapons, both visually and functionally. The game is so easy even on max difficulty that your character development choices do not matter outside of dictating how you approach encounters.
The presentation is good, I wouldn't call it visually stunning but it has it's own style that makes it stand out. The music, audio and voice acting are ok, even though some voice actors sounded just as bored delivering their lines as I was listening to them.
Technically the game runs well and was bug free, quite the achievement for Obsidian.
I've bounced off this game after multiple attempts, there is just nothing deep enough to keep me immersed to finish it.
