The Outer Worlds is an award-winning single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.
Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
KEY FEATURES
The player-driven story RPG
In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
You can be flawed, in a good way
New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
Lead your companions
During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
Explore the corporate colony
Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.
The Outer Worlds feels like a toothless New Vegas with worst quest design and role playing elements, it tries to please everyone, be politically correct at every turns which gets kinda... stale? after a few hours, the combat is barebones and unrefined, perks lack the usual Fallout charm, the humor is not good and so forth.
I guess it's serviceable if you don't mind a bland experience.
somewhat likable
If you never played Mass Effect you will like it, maybe or maybe not.
But if you have played Mass Effect like me (20 times at least up to perfection), you start comparing.
The Characters are well made and their voice-acting is acceptable.
The Quests are little less intuitive to bordom, though. Basically, you need AorZ, Character B tells you how to get it if you do him a favor, and along the way you find more needy people who will help you if you do them also a favor, etc. There's nothing wrong with that. Mass Effect was essentially pretty much the same with one big distinction. Mass Effect was fun. The Outer Worlds try to be Mass Effect and Fallout at the same time. That was a little to much to accomplish. You have to like the game or hate it, because of the game mechanics.
To compare, it's a little like as if The Outer Worlds face the same problem as all newcomers in the Battle Royal Genre and eventually die.
Sadly, The Outer Worlds have achieved nothing new or outstanding. It is an old gameplay with lots to remmenance of other titles in the genre which are far better.
The controls and combat is very well done without any complaint.
The graphics, sure show their age, but that's fine considering there are worst titles like Elix.
For a 30 quid game it is way too expensive for what it is. Period!
This is not an open ended game like Fallout or Skyrim. You will need to advance the story to be strong enough to explore, and this story has a focus.
This being said, this game is extremely solid, in the style of Fallout but in space.
The graphics are great and the game engine runs really good on most cards.
The sound is incredible, but I recommend headphones to play this to be immersed.
The controls are good with either a controller or a keyboard and mouse, so pick whichever.
My only gripe with the game is that you'll want to play it at least three times with different factions to see the dialogs and different quests, which might turn off a lot of people since the road to this is not quite so clear, unless you play with a guide.
I enjoyed my time with the game, it's really funny and playing the game as a low intelligence character on a second playthrough, and you can play the game with flaws on your stats to balance you out.
This game was hyped up so much before its release, mostly by the press, as "Fallout in space", and it's easy to see why upon looking at the game's aesthetic and basic gameplay. In fact, there are definitely some things about it that are much like Fallout.
After release, however, it was clear that it wasn't really Fallout in space, not that the developers ever really said it was. It never seemed to be their intention to make it out to be that way, only that it was certainly inspired by it.
This is one of Obsidian's first forays into a unique IP, untethered by the likes of Star Wars and Fallout, free to create their own world and make their own gameplay. To expect it to be exactly like KotOR 2 or Fallout: New Vegas is frankly silly, and that shouldn't be the expectation one should have on going into this game.
Halcyon, the solar system in which the game is set, has some beautiful environments and lovely setpieces. The first area you visit, Emerald Vale, sets the stage for the feel of the entire game, and it does so beautifully. Unlike the folly that was the Peragus II Mining Colony in KotOR 2, Emerald Vale doesn't feel like a slog, and neither does the rest of the game. Alongside that, the characters are wonderful and feel delightfully human.
The game is not an open world, but the way the game is designed, it would have only hindered it. The game has a much smaller scale than Fallout, being much closer in scope to KotOR 2, and that's where I think the crux of the problem is for a lot of players.
The press overhyped the game, calling it an open world and Fallout in space, and everyone went into it expecting that.
But I think the game deserves to be played for what it is. It's not perfect by any means, and there are a lot of things that could be improved by the next entry, but it's extremely promising, and I can't wait to see what Obsidian gives us next, whether it's Avowed or another Outer Worlds game.
Good game, good story, interesting companions, good graphics, plays good, sounds good. My only complaints are I wish there was less loading screens, and that it took a bit more risks. The devs here played it a bit too safe. I wish you could see your created character in 3rd person, and that the game was open world, but I get it, this was a AA game, not a AAA since there wasnt as much budget. I got this game to support the devs, and also bought the DLCs to support obsidion. They have a lot of talent, they just need to go all out, go yolo on outer worlds part 2!!!
