The Outer Worlds is an award-winning single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.
Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
KEY FEATURES
The player-driven story RPG
In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
You can be flawed, in a good way
New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
Lead your companions
During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
Explore the corporate colony
Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.
I really like this game!
Huge fan of fallout since i was just a kid so this game was right up my alley.
Combat is good, enviroment is beautiful and the story/side quests have been solid so far.
One thing i love about this game is that i can be a total jerk or a saint towards people!
So dialogue choices matters and sometimes there are some really funny dialogue choices.
Advertised as a spiritual successor to Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds certainly borrows heavily from what may be the best 3D Fallout of all time. Fan favorites such as unique dialog options for low-intelligence characters return, as do dark humor, rampant corporate excesses, and diverse settlements with their own particular issues. There is even a VATS-esque time-slowing mechanism for the PC. Even better, the game is well optimized, and polished well enough that I encountered no game-breaking bugs.
There are some things lacking. I wish there was a third-person view, and the last portion of the game felt rushed. I definitely would have liked for the game to be longer - even with the DLC, I finished it in thirty hours. GOG should definitely get rights to sell the soundtrack. But in the end, it's not Spacer's Choice: it's the right choice.
(Review based on Steam version; I have the game on my wishlist here, and will get it once the Soundtrack is available).
If you like 1st person RP games, this is a good one. It has some very interesting scenery, game play is typical of RP games with a storyline to follow, plenty to explore, loot, etc
The characters have some amusing "personalities" and quips. Many of the male characters look a lot alike, as if they are related to one another. Over all, I find this to be a very enjoyable way to pass time.
It does have a few issues which I think could be improved.
1. Unlike other RP games I've played, there is no way to play it in a 3rd person view. The only way to view your character is by just stop playing and don't touch the controls for awhile, or if you just want to see what your character looks like, pause and look in the inventory menu, etc.
2. You just get to choose between a few different controller set ups. I have not seen a way to reset each button to your liking but I can work with this.
3. There are times I find aiming with a mouse to be easier and more accurate than with the controller. It takes clicking the mouse button to switch from the controller to the mouse and the controller will often take back over in the middle of an action, which I do not like. I prefer the way other games do it or to completely disable the game's controller option and reroute keyboard keys to the controller using a 3rd party software. If there is a way to do that, I haven't found it yet in this game.
Mechanically flat and boring, narratively plain, predictable and dull (despite all the effort to be sarcastic and satirical), aesthetically oversaturated without style.
"It just works" - Todd Howard. Enough said.
The game itself is good and is fun to play, but don't expect it to be a new "New Vegas" game.
The game is pretty basic (graphics, game mechanics, items, etc.), but it's not bad at all.
It provides quite some hours of gameplay and it's also pretty addictive, but it's still too short and it feels like something is missing. With better graphics, more content, locations, story, etc. it would've been awesome. In this form it's just good.
