Dynamic, acrobatic gameplay and ultra tight controls worthy of an epic ninja adventure.
Character upgrades, new abilities, hidden levels, and branching paths to discover.
Meticulously designed 8-bit and 16-bit sprites, animations, and backgrounds in the spirit of the classics.
A memorable cast of offbeat villains, bosses, and associates.
Original soundtrack by renowned chiptune composer Rainbowdragoneyes, handmade using Famitracker.
Excellent platformer. I have been playing it for a couple of hours and my early impression is that this is a masterpiece. I will update the review if something changes but I don't expect I will.
Nice game. I've always wanted to be a Ninja :) And here I had that opportunity. What came out really brilliant is humor, graphics, fighting with bosses. The shopkeeper is very funny :)
The ordinary opponents are kind of repetitive but it's not bad.
The game gets really hard at some point. It took a lot of effort to get finish some of the bosses. But it was worth it. I heartily recommend the game :)
I went back and forth deciding whether I should choose four or five stars for my rating, but I eventually decided on five stars. The game has extremely good controls, a fantastic storyline, and memorable characters, but the gameplay can quickly become frustrating. You end up dying very easily, but there are enough upgrades to keep you engaged. The boss fights are original, but often take a number of tries to complete. This game plays very similarly to Shovel Knight, so if you're into that kind of game, then I highly recommend this title. I'm anxious to see what other indie games come out in the coming years.
The Messenger is a recreation of a 2D Platforming experience similar to what Hollow Knight did for metriodvanias. First, this game has some fantastic writing. The writing ranges from witty and humorous to thought provoking. The controls are fluid and the game is simply full of surprises. The title is honestly aware that it changes between graphically formats, 8 bit and 16 bit, and is better for it. The music is suberb and when changing between eras, the tracks do as well. I have no negatives for this title as I have played through almost 3 times and each time has a been a joy. I just hope the free DLC comes to GOG too.
It was a really enjoyable experience. The story was pretty basic, but wonderfully delivered by engaging characters. The game likes to make fun of itself and make fun of its flaws (ex:the whole death and revive mechanic). Some would call it meta, but most would call it funny. Despite some tongue in cheek comments and references, the delivery and tone stick to the games of old.
The level design and soundtrack really shine! Unlike newer games, there are few collectibles and no cosmetic stuff. Just the game. The story mandates that you revisit the levels for reasons but it does not get repetitive, because once you get the time travel mechanic, the levels literally change and you have to adapt using the new toosl you have and time travel mechanic. There will also be multiple areas of entry and exit in the level. The soundtrack changes with the era (8 bit and 16 bit) and the music sounds amazing in both. I'm considering buying the OST.
The only thing I could complain about was the conflict between the glide and jump button when you get hit, because sometimes you want to glide instead of double jump, but you have to waste your second jump to glide again...
2 of the power seal sections were hard, but those are optional. Two of the bosses were also hard, but not too hard. Just right.
