As a demon army besieges his village, a young ninja ventures through a cursed world, to deliver a scroll paramount to his clan’s survival. What begins as a classic action platformer soon unravels into an expansive time-traveling adventure full of thrills, surprises, and humor.
Dynamic, acrobatic gameplay and ultra tight controls worthy of an epic ninja adventure.
Character upgrades, new abilities, hidden levels, and branching paths to discover.
Meticulously designed 8-bit and 16-bit sprites, animations, and backgrounds in the spirit of the classics.
A memorable cast of offbeat villains, bosses, and associates.
Original soundtrack by renowned chiptune composer Rainbowdragoneyes, handmade using Famitracker.
Clearly an homage to Ninja Gaiden, though slightly easier. Controls are perfectly responsive and fluid. The mid-game twist made it especially endearing to me. The writing has a clear tongue-in-cheek and "wink, wink" aspect to it which demonstrates self-awareness and the creators' own love of their work. A very enjoyable action game.
I've been playing the game for few hours, and it is a great game. The music, the game play, and the pixelated style remembers me Kabuki: Quantum Fighter from NES. Of course, the music quality is better since it is a contemporary.
I would recommend this game, It's really good.
Don't think this is another good 8bit platformer with 8 bit art style (like Shovel Knight i.e.) It is... and it's not! You'll find great platforming here and lots of challenges (but with a very gentle difficulty curve)
But this game is MORE than that! This game will subjugate you for the 15 hours it takes e to finish it. Everything in this game is prefect: graphics, music but, above all, game play. Let it a chance to surprise you!
Play it and do it NOW!

The Messenger is a great tribute to side-scrolling action platformers from the 90's enhanced by new refreshing ideas. There are many positives in the game like good level design, RPG elements, variable environments, challenging yet not frustrating difficulty, responsive controls, challenging boss battles, nice graphics, great soundtrack and fundamental twist in the game making it virtually 2 games in one. On the negative side are not very variable enemies and not so inventive story and maybe the absence of co-op multiplayer which would make it more suitable for family playing. Is it suitable for children? Well, definitely not for the pre-school ones but children at the age of 10+ should enjoy it.
Pros:
- level design
- RPG elements
- variable environments
- reasonable difficulty
- controls
- boss battles
- graphics and soundtrack
- 2 games in one
Cons:
- variability of enemies
- story
- absence of local co-op
I have enjoyed playing the Messenger so I am giving it Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s index 8+ out of 10 - recommended!
I was bit hesitant at first because there are some retro platformers that I like, but there are a lot more that I don’t. I wish there was more like this one.
At first it starts really simple and almost boring, until you get to the first boss, that is rather easy to beat but still fun, and after that every level holds some new mechanic that spices up the game a bit. The boss fights in general are well designed and enjoyable maybe with 1-2 exceptions.
The progression system is nothing exceptional, but it does its job, it prevents the game from being too easy at start or too difficult in the end. Speaking of difficulty, the game is challenging. I am sure that hardcore players find it a cakewalk, but if you are not a veteran arcade player you may get stuck here and there. The DLC is a whole different thing though. It is not for the fainthearted.
The story is okay, nothing extra, but it has a cute sense of humor.
The first half of the game is completely linear, while the second part is an open world treasure hunt, some people may not like that. If you are not such a person, I have one thing left to say to you. Buy the THING!
