I've been playing adventure games since the 80s and The Longest Journey is my favourite of all time. It's meant to be played slow and lazily so sit back and drink in all the deep stories and beautiful art.
This game is worth so much more than $9.99. It's easily one of my favorite adventure games ever. It's also one of the longest, so don't expect to go through it all in one sitting. Amazing story, characters, dialogue, puzzles... this game has it all. I won't go into any details because I don't want to spoil anything, but it truly is incredible.
This is coming from someone who has played almost every Lucasarts and Sierra game, but this game has the kind of gameplay and plot that surpasses ANY other game i've ever played (on par only with its sequel, Dreamfall). (I know those old games bring back nostalgia, but being older doesn't automatically make something better)
If you want a highly-immersive game that you won't want to put down, look no further. Best adventure game, period.
Easily the finest adventure game ever made. Bittersweet, beautiful, funny, touching, sad, gorgeous, sympathetic...if only there weren't a few irritating puzzles it would be absolutely perfect. But even with that, it's a must-play. There are some games I"m sure we all wish we could erase from our minds to re-enjoy for the first time, and this is one for me!
I am truly baffled by all the 5 star ratings for this game. Are we playing the same game?
Take everything you like about your favorite games. The beauty of the Myst franchise, the quirky coolness of Syberia, the atmosphere of Dear Esther, and......chuck it all out the window. This game has none of that.
The dialogue is ridiculous in the extreme. The puzzles are just....stupid. And the graphics are (very!) dated. I forgive the graphics, because it is an old game, but the rest is just craziness.
What are you people talking about in your reviews? People talking about the dialogue being mature and intelligent? I could only see a pubescent 14 year old boy saying this dialogue is mature and intelligent. Seriously, if you're over 21 and don't think nearly everything they say is just moronic, you need to, shoot, I don't know, read more or something. It is the most cringe-worthy thing I've seen since I used to watch bad B-movies with my friends in College just to have something to laugh about.
It's like a game of Mystery Science Theater 3000 without Joel, Tom Servo, and Crow down there to make fun of it. You know, that might not be a bad idea.......
Seriously, guys, I've tried everything to get through this game. I have the walkthrough called up on my second monitor and I was just powering through so I didn't waste my $9, but I decided I would pay another $9 just to quit playing. I turned off the voices and just read the sub-titles because I just thought perhaps the awful voice-acting was ruining the story. Nope, it was just as bad reading it.
Seriously, hop on YouTube and type in "Let's Play The Longest Journey". Watch some other poor yutz play it for an hour or so, and if you still think it's something you want to play, then I'm a big enough man to admit that you need therapy for masochism.
I cannot recommend enough that you pass this howler by. Good luck!
