The story is memorable, well worth playing. You'll have to get past the graphics to enjoy it, though. The visual side hasn't aged well. I played this for the first time earlier this year and enjoyed it quite a bit. So it really is a good one, even without the nostalgia.
Only ten years after The Secret of Monkey Island, the once-beloved adventure genre was dying. This was one of the last great point'n'click adventures, and after it... Only darkness.
Very long conversations (is that a bad thing?), mature themes, a beautiful soundtrack (which is available in mp3 format), 3D characters in prerendered backgrounds, oldschool puzzles with good adventure gameplay... and above all, a great story that pulls the player into the game.
If you like adventure games, you'll probably enjoy The Longest Journey. There's also a full 3D sequel, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (confusing title! Why didn't they just call it "TLJ2: Dreamfall"?), but this is the beginning of the journey. They don't make games like this anymore!
this is one of the greatest games ever made. it has brilliant characters superb storylines, breathtaking back drops, beautious music and as every point and click annoyinging needle but addictive puzzles! i have lost count how many times i plaid this but i wore out two discs! the follow up dreamfall doesnt quite match it but follows rightly after. and hopefully there is more with chapters! but any true point and click gamer can not help but love this game and anything affiliated with this game!
Not everyone likes point-and-click adventure games, and not every one likes long dialogue scenes with plenty of exposition. If you do like adventure games with strong story telling, The Longest Journey is indisputably one of the great classics of the genre and I highly recommend adding it to your collection.
I've been playing adventure games since the 80s and The Longest Journey is my favourite of all time. It's meant to be played slow and lazily so sit back and drink in all the deep stories and beautiful art.
