Description
Modern society owes much to a mystical technology known as “orbal energy.” Fifty years ago, during what’s come to be known as the “Orbal Revolution,” the invention of this technology and the “orbments” developed from it led to a period of rapid human advancement, birthing innovations of all shapes and sizes -- not the least of which was the airliner, or “orbalship” industry. Although the positive impact of this revolution is obvious, every coin has a flipside; for every beneficial device developed with these new materials, so too were advanced weapons and other implements of war. Thus, the land became mired with turmoil, and remains in such a state even now.

Enter, the bracers: an organization established to serve as police and intermediaries alike, holding above all else the peace and safety of the lands under their jurisdiction. Whenever a citizen is in need of assistance, he or she may place a request at the local Bracer Guild -- and be it monster extermination, crime prevention or even peace talks among warring nations, the bracers will do whatever they can to resolve the matter cleanly and efficiently.

Some matters require a gentler touch than others, however. When an orbalship transporting a legendary "S-rank" bracer named Cassius Bright suddenly goes missing, said bracer's daughter, Estelle, and adoptive son, Joshua, must join forces in search of him across the entire Kingdom of Liberl.

And what they find along the way could change both of their lives forever...

Hailed as one of the largest, longest and most meticulously detailed turn-based JRPG series of all time, this first chapter in the ongoing Trails saga sets the stage for what's quickly become Ys developer Nihon Falcom's most popular and best-selling franchise in their entire 30+ year history. Introducing people, places, ideas, events and lore that rival in complexity those of even the most highly-regarded fantasy epics in literature, the care and attention given to each and every NPC, location and historical in-game event is what sets The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky apart from its contemporaries.

Come join Estelle, Joshua, Scherazard, Olivier and the rest of the cast as they uncover the secret underbelly of Liberl in their first 50+ hour masterpiece, and see what Japanese gamers have been raving about for over ten years.
  • Classic JRPG with over 50 hours of gameplay, strategic turn-based combat, and countless side-quests.
  • A vast world where every NPC has a name and personality, every town has its own unique politics and economic concerns, and no detail is ever trivial.
  • Widescreen and USB gamepad support, selectable difficulty and new game+ features.

A JRPG for JRPG fans.

The title sounds obvious but what I mean is that Trails of the Sky FC is a game that is *only* for a JRPG fan and nobody else. There's no hook, there's no intricate battle system, there isn't fancy graphics, and the soundtrack isn't amazing. You'll either like or dislike Trails specifically for what you're looking for. A well written, slow, good JRPG. If you want anything else, save your money. If you're not a JRPG fan, or you're looking to dabble, usually you want a hook of some sort to grab onto. That could be a great early story twist or a battle system. Even graphics in the case of FF7 but Trails has none of that. Eventually a compelling story will develop but by that point you'll have had to invest atleast two to three hours to get there. Trails is set up in a way that you're supposed to talk to NPC's to absorb the world, take a look around and not rush through...but that's also one of its major faults. NPC's go through their own storylines such as a rich merchant trying to make a business deal; every "blip" of the main story will advance that NPC's personal story and you'll be able to read if they succeed or fail or whatever happens to them. There's many such stories but they have absolutely no bearing on your character or the main plot. They are in effect meaningless to the overall game structure. But that's what Trails is going for, to show you that the world exists beyond your characters through these NPC's. You have to seek things out. It also means the game is very slow if you're going to do that. And it means a lot of reading. A lot. If you don't like reading a lot of dialogue this is not the game for you. And if you don't like backtracking this is not the game for you. I've enjoyed my time with it but it's largely just because I wanted to play a JRPG. If I wasn't in the mood for a JRPG (and this was one of the few that work well on PC) I wouldn't be playing it. It also needs to always be known this ends in a cliffhanger. Be aware of that.

Not quite what I expected

I purchased Trails In The Sky on the premise that it appeared to be quite an old school RPG in terms of how it looked, and felt. I remember games such as Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger, and always admired their simpe but epic feel back in the day, and wondered if this may have been just like those games only on a much larger scale, recapturing that sense of adventure and fun from the 16 bit era. Be warned - this is story driven to a point I personally found it to be unplayable. Even a simple quest has so much dialogue and exposition that, in many hours of play I can't have played more than twenty minutes of the actual game. Locations feel bland and samey, and you can't really do anything - building interiors all have a certain theme and feel to them which never varies, and there is no clicking on something and getting a little dialogue or description just for fun. The game, in all honesty, feels hollow, a half hearted nostalgic shell designed purely to contain the endless dialogue. Everything about Trails in the Sky feels like an attempt to recreate the heyday of it's genre, even down the the music you will hear upon leaving your house for the fist time, but it just falls very flat in my opinion. If you enjoy conversation after conversation after conversation and feel the gameplay is secondary, you will probably enjoy this. For me, it felt very boring. It attempts to be sweeping and dramatic, but it lacks any real heart. I've given this three stars as I can see the appeal for some people, and had there been half the dialogue and more to the environments this would have been a great game. Just not for me.

Not bad

I've been craving a good old-school rpg for a few months. This satisfies all those desires. The game ports quite well, but there are some glaring issues. The controller scheme is a little messed up. You can use your mouse, but for some reason the keyboard didn't work (even after the patch and using the config.exe). It also failed to boot until I changed the resolution to something not quite right. However, this game is great. The graphics are sharp and the movement accurate (though a little fast). The translation is good, and there is a LOT of dialogue. If you want a game for story, this isn't it. The game leads you to like the NPC's and your characters, but it's a pretty generic idea (many of the mechanics feel ripped from other games). I enjoy the very thorough development of all the characters, but the main storyline is lacking. Gameplay is pretty good. It's a little tactical, but nothing too overbearing. You won't have any difficult breezing through the games combat system. You will however, need to dedicate about 70 hours if you want to read and do everything in this game. Is it worth it? For me yes, but I don't think many other people would enjoy it.

A JRPG master piece

I know that when you see the visuals you gonna think "this game looks slow, boring, generic" but believe me is not even closed. This game is just perfect! the best start with this long story with a great writing, great characters and a deep world to explore with a lot of lore to discover
