Description
Modern society owes much to a mystical technology known as “orbal energy.” Fifty years ago, during what’s come to be known as the “Orbal Revolution,” the invention of this technology and the “orbments” developed from it led to a period of rapid human advancement, birthing innovations of all shapes and sizes -- not the least of which was the airliner, or “orbalship” industry. Although the positive impact of this revolution is obvious, every coin has a flipside; for every beneficial device developed with these new materials, so too were advanced weapons and other implements of war. Thus, the land became mired with turmoil, and remains in such a state even now.

Enter, the bracers: an organization established to serve as police and intermediaries alike, holding above all else the peace and safety of the lands under their jurisdiction. Whenever a citizen is in need of assistance, he or she may place a request at the local Bracer Guild -- and be it monster extermination, crime prevention or even peace talks among warring nations, the bracers will do whatever they can to resolve the matter cleanly and efficiently.

Some matters require a gentler touch than others, however. When an orbalship transporting a legendary "S-rank" bracer named Cassius Bright suddenly goes missing, said bracer's daughter, Estelle, and adoptive son, Joshua, must join forces in search of him across the entire Kingdom of Liberl.

And what they find along the way could change both of their lives forever...

Hailed as one of the largest, longest and most meticulously detailed turn-based JRPG series of all time, this first chapter in the ongoing Trails saga sets the stage for what's quickly become Ys developer Nihon Falcom's most popular and best-selling franchise in their entire 30+ year history. Introducing people, places, ideas, events and lore that rival in complexity those of even the most highly-regarded fantasy epics in literature, the care and attention given to each and every NPC, location and historical in-game event is what sets The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky apart from its contemporaries.

Come join Estelle, Joshua, Scherazard, Olivier and the rest of the cast as they uncover the secret underbelly of Liberl in their first 50+ hour masterpiece, and see what Japanese gamers have been raving about for over ten years.
  • Classic JRPG with over 50 hours of gameplay, strategic turn-based combat, and countless side-quests.
  • A vast world where every NPC has a name and personality, every town has its own unique politics and economic concerns, and no detail is ever trivial.
  • Widescreen and USB gamepad support, selectable difficulty and new game+ features.

A fantastic, if a bit slow JRPG.

Trails in the sky FC is a fantastic game, no doubt. The world and characters are superb. Everything feels well written with huge amounts of script to work through. It's rare for a game to feel so alive. The game does has its flaws though. The combat system is basic, unbalanced whilst proving a solid base for the later games. The music is great, but be prepared to listen to certain tracks over and over. Story wise the game takes its time introducing you to it's story, so much so the game feels like one giant prologue to the rest of the series. It's not till the last chapter that you'll feel like the game finally opens up and finally graces you with some important plot points. Despite its flaws it's truly a fantastic game that will leave you wanting more. But be expected to invest quite a bit of time and patience.

Slow Burning Intro to an Epic Saga

Trails in the Sky First Chapter is slow to get going. I saw someone else call it a game-length prologue, and while I don't think that is quite a fair characterization, I understood what they meant. The Legend of Heroes kicks off with the first adventure of an ignorant and naive girl named (B)Estelle. On my first playthrough, I wasn't really feeling it until the cutscene between chapters 2 and 3. That was my first glimpse of the philosophical depth this series was bringing. It reaches Shakespearean heights in later games that build on this foundation. On my second playthrough, after I had played through the rest of the Liberl arc, the Crossbell arc, the Erebonian arc, and Trails into Reverie, what were merely mysterious and subtle hints of something deeper on my first playthrough were resonating with later developments and blowing my mind with the rigor of the writing and worldbuilding that went into this incredible franchise. The music, the worldbuilding, the character growth, and the feels this franchise brings are truly something special.

JRPG done right

This is REALLY good. Let's briefly touch the different criteria that defines a JRPG and see why this game nails it. - Story and setting: pretty amazing stuff. Not your crystals of the elements plot, but instead a political struggle with very well defined organizations that have different influences on the world. Geography and History are explained briefly and are part of the plot, so it doesn't feel like homework but it still feels like A GAME. - Characters: I love them. I mean, I guess they're not special or anything, you SURELY have seen 'em before somewhere else, but that doesn't mean ther're unlikable. - Power and combat: It's okay. Orbment system allows for a lot of swapping and sperimentation, and the combat, while a little basic, is still fun and challenging enough to not be a bore. I was REALLY surprised when I played this. I didn't expect much really, I just wanted "Any jrpg I can grind while I listen to the Dresden Files audiobooks", but I found so much more. If this is your first time with JRPG, it may not be for you because you wouldn't appreciate those points I talked about like I did. But if you have moderate experience, this will feel really fresh.

The Best Tactical JRPG of the 2000s!

This game was a crazy and wild ride and I enjoyed all 76 hours and 44 minutes of it. I went through the game and 100% the whole thing. This game is one of the very few to move me to tears. The story, the worldbuilding, the gameplay, the humour, the music, it's all SSS+ class and everyone should play this masterpiece of game design! The graphics won't win any awards nowadays but back in 2004, this was quite surreal for an RPG to have this huge of a size and scope, rivalling games like Fable and Jade Empire for their money! Please give this game a chance. It. Is. Phenomenal. Forever a Nihon Falcom megafan! <3
