Description
Modern society owes much to a mystical technology known as “orbal energy.” Fifty years ago, during what’s come to be known as the “Orbal Revolution,” the invention of this technology and the “orbments” developed from it led to a period of rapid human advancement, birthing innovations of all shapes and sizes -- not the least of which was the airliner, or “orbalship” industry. Although the positive impact of this revolution is obvious, every coin has a flipside; for every beneficial device developed with these new materials, so too were advanced weapons and other implements of war. Thus, the land became mired with turmoil, and remains in such a state even now.

Enter, the bracers: an organization established to serve as police and intermediaries alike, holding above all else the peace and safety of the lands under their jurisdiction. Whenever a citizen is in need of assistance, he or she may place a request at the local Bracer Guild -- and be it monster extermination, crime prevention or even peace talks among warring nations, the bracers will do whatever they can to resolve the matter cleanly and efficiently.

Some matters require a gentler touch than others, however. When an orbalship transporting a legendary "S-rank" bracer named Cassius Bright suddenly goes missing, said bracer's daughter, Estelle, and adoptive son, Joshua, must join forces in search of him across the entire Kingdom of Liberl.

And what they find along the way could change both of their lives forever...

Hailed as one of the largest, longest and most meticulously detailed turn-based JRPG series of all time, this first chapter in the ongoing Trails saga sets the stage for what's quickly become Ys developer Nihon Falcom's most popular and best-selling franchise in their entire 30+ year history. Introducing people, places, ideas, events and lore that rival in complexity those of even the most highly-regarded fantasy epics in literature, the care and attention given to each and every NPC, location and historical in-game event is what sets The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky apart from its contemporaries.

Come join Estelle, Joshua, Scherazard, Olivier and the rest of the cast as they uncover the secret underbelly of Liberl in their first 50+ hour masterpiece, and see what Japanese gamers have been raving about for over ten years.
  • Classic JRPG with over 50 hours of gameplay, strategic turn-based combat, and countless side-quests.
  • A vast world where every NPC has a name and personality, every town has its own unique politics and economic concerns, and no detail is ever trivial.
  • Widescreen and USB gamepad support, selectable difficulty and new game+ features.

An inviting journey

If you ever wanted to play a game where 50 hours flow like water, characters are felt, worldbuilding is extensive, this is it. You feel like a part of this world, a part of overarching plot that unflods before you and behind the curtains, a part of something bigger. I haven't even played JRPGs a lot, and am not intrigued upon hearing those two words, 'turn based'. But in this one I find combat to be quite challenging and requiring you to actually think about your tactics and how it's all going to play out. Unless you're grinding, which I don't remember doing much, then it's not about mindlessly tapping attack. But I think what matters most here is the charactes and how they are all part of this living, breathing world. While I feel absolutely bored by many other games, I came back to this one and load up a save to re-experience some of the moments. I'm usually concerned about the time it takes to play through a game in a sense that I don't want to spend 2-4 weeks playing just one, but It is definitely worth the time and money here, all 50 hours or something. The game is fun. Do bother.

The game that started it all

This game begins the Legend of Heroes series. I have played many, many games in my time, but never have I played a game like this one This game is the first of the series. Despite being the first, it does everything right, imho. This game starts the Liberl Arc, consisting of this game, Trails in the Sky SC, and Trails in the Sky the Third. Once an Arc is complete, you have finished the story for that region and main characters. However, there is an overall story that continues into other Arcs. After Trails in the Sky, there is the Crosbell Arc, with Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure Then begins the Cold Steel arc, with Cold Steel 1, 2, 3, 4. Then Hajimari is due to release at some point In spite of this... the whole series is only ~70% done!!!! Its a long, long franchise. But there is nothing like it. I would never recommend that much of a commitment if you weren't going to love it. But you will love this if you have ever loved RPGs, JRPGs, Story, or Characters. Because the Legend of Heroes does this SO right. This game, like all of them.... Its really text heavy. But I love it. You get to know so much about the characters and the world. Not just the main bits either. You actually can learn about all the different NPCs; there are practically no generic NPCs with the same two lines of dialogue. First game that ever made me care about NPCs. Actually, one of the only ones. This game is a slow burn, like most of them. Thats the nature of it being text heavy. But this is NOT a disadvantage of the game; this is actually its strength as its world and characters are its charm The combat is turn based, and quite deep. Its a lot of fun figuring out that tweak that just makes your team unstoppable and broken. Granted, thats on normal; nightmare mode is harder. Story is just... everything. I love it. The main story, the characters, the world... Seriously, I can never stop recommending this game.

Fine JRPG, maybe one of the best

I have played a few JRPGs (Final Fantasy 1, 2, 6, 7, 15) Phantasy Stars 1& 2 and a few others. This is one of the best JRPGs or even RPGs I have played. The characters are likeable, they grow during the progression, there are multiple systems to master, secrets are not that annoying, some good side quests, and an inventive camera/graphics system. I really enjoyed my time with the game. It was long and there was some grinding needed, but it wasn't overly annoying. I think I may have grown bored it if I hadn't sometimes changed games with action games (Tomb Raider) or other RPGs (Tides of Numenera) to change things up some. It is long. I enjoyed my times with it and I would recommend it if you enjoy JRPGs or RPGs in general. There are some points that are easy and some points that are difficult but I think folks can make their way through it.

Notice to new bracers

Honestly just giving it 5 stars for the music, battles and character interactions. The story is alright, but i always enjoyed meeting the new characters and finding lore in new places. The battle system is interesting and I want to see the battle orbment system expand. I wanted to keep playing as a bracer going to new places, meeting new people, hearing new music, and solving puzzles.

Finally found an rpg game that brings back childhood memories. I'm glad I found this series, it's going to bring hours and hours of enjoyment. This game is fun, colorful, graphics are very good, story is deep. Recommended for old school RPG fans.
