Finally!

Bought this game in a box back in 2011. The Steam Key didn't work. Couldn't get it activated and couldn't get a refund. Bought the Legendary edition back in 2016 and that didn't work either. Again, Valve's stellar customer support didn't care. This is now the third time I've bought this game and, after almost 11 years, I'm about to play it for the first time.

A sandbox RPG masterpiece

Ah, Skyrim... if you haven't played it yet, you've certainly heard countless stories and all the love that RPG and open world fans pour on this game. It's the game that defined an entire generation of open world games (including The Witcher 3). The Elder Scrolls franchise is outright legendary for its freeform gameplay and sandbox freedom and Skyrim took that freedom to new territory. Previous Elder Scrolls games were a bit more difficult as they were a lot closer to a tabletop RPG translated into digital form. Skyrim released as the series was gaining mainstream attention, however, so Bethesda streamlined a lot of elements to make things more accessible. Many of my fellow long-term fans were upset by this decision but personally, I thought it was fine. Because of this streamlining, players are able to just PLAY: play however they want and not have to worry too much about crafting their character build. While this did reduce replayability a bit, I've put over 1k hours into the game across all versions and I still find it thoroughly enjoyable. Skyrim takes place in a beautiful fantasy world inspired by ancient Norse culture and has a truly epic, world-shattering story... but you never even have to follow that story. You can play the full length of a normal game takes just by doing whatever you want to do. Want to be a soldier? Join up with one of the two military factions. A mage? The College of Winterhold. Want to just create a family man working a trade to provide for his loved ones? Also 100% viable. This series epitomizes the true meaning and potential of a roleplaying game and Skyrim is absolutely no different in that regard. This game truly has something for everyone, and that's just in the base game. The three DLCs add a lot more opportunity and many more hours to enjoy. Now that the game is DRM-free, none of my fellow GOGers have any reason to skip out on this game! If you like open world, sandbox games, you owe it to yourself to buy this ASAP!

Big and Bland

Skyrim was an ambitious project and a minor cultural milestone. A game with this size of a static (neither random nor generated from a seed) world was nearly unprecedented. While this later edition improves on the buggy mess that Skyrim was, it doesn't address the core major flaw; Skyrim was highly repetitive and thus dull. The rubberbanding of encounters to your poorly-conceived 'level' helps keep you from feeling like you are making progress and creates major problems with learning certain skills. Don't get me wrong, if you haven't played it before you'll probably have a fine time for the first 10-20 hours. However, after the 10th 'turn the pillar' or the 5th claw puzzle, you'll start to wear. You'll start to notice that the devs didn't have enough ideas to fill the massive space they created, so they repeated a very small bag of tricks with minor variations hundreds of times. That the game balance is rather easy to break, in both directions. If you go down the modding rabbit hole, you'll find that mods can help paper over these core flaws, but that the mods can only really mask the problems, not fix them. This is a game that'll drive you nuts if you are a completionist. So buy it without expecting to ever finish it. When you load in, remember that while you are learning to pick flowers, the Draugr are training. (google the last four words)

No Creation Kit

I'm glad you can now buy Skyrim on GOG. But unfortunately the GOG version of the game (at the moment 09.10.2022) doesn't come with a Cretion Kit. This means that you still need a Steam version to make mods.

296 mods WORKING- TY GOG and mod authors

Skyrim is a fun open world RPG. Mods help make it awesome. My build includes the following: - Mod Organizer 2 - SKSE - SkyUI - RaceMenu - PapyrusUtil - Papyrus Extender - Proteus - JContainers - Nemesis - CGO - Ultimate Combat - Ordinator If you aren't sure about making the switch from Steam, you can try things out without wrecking your classic 1.5.97 build. Run the Steam and GOG versions of the game next to each other with MO2. Make a couple of profiles and swap out the managed game paths in the settings. Then set up a separate SKSE executable in the main panel, and you're good. Thanks for getting Skyrim on GOG. I'm so happy that I don't have to run Steam and that I may never go through another Skyrim update again.
