I bought this thinking it was the 1.5.97 version but it is not. GOG markets two versions of the game as SE and AE. However, it appears both games are really AE, one with the CC content and the other without. I have a large mod list (over 800+) that works with v1.5.97 so this version would need extensive testing to see what works and what doesn't. No rollback to v1.5.97 is available (as of now). I'd give the game five stars (love Skyrim) but due to the above I'm knocking off two stars.
Currently (Oct 6, 2022),:
-the Anniversary GOG version 1.6.659.0.8 is incompatible with several SKSE64 plugins, SkyUI, and Quality World Map and some progression mods I use (that I'm aware of),
-the Rollback feature GOG Galaxy advertises is NOT available for Skyrim SE A so forget this being modded game friendly in the present... hopefully Gog gets a hold of older versions so we dont have to nuke our mods and load orders,
-the creation club stuff is nice but ^^^^^^^ is why I'd hold off atm.
...Give it a few months, to a year before you buy imo.
Skyrim suffers from three big issues:
1.) Its AI is stupid as a log.
For example a follower can often get lost, because he can't follow you out over a small step on the river (or some stones downhill), tries to find another way, and for that runs around half the country, And usually getting stuck or sinking in the ground trying that.
Other instances would be people talking to you, while someone else hacks you to death. One would guess its a stupid idea to try to kill someone not trying to fight back in front of guards or the ruler. But that rule only is for you, NPCs doing this might just be ignored.
2.) The quest writing often ist done awful
Some of those are okay. Some are of a kind, where it seems someone has thrown a handful of "quest ingredients" in a pot, stirred, and called it done. All kind of weird situations come from that, often people talking to you simultanously, you looking for people in wrong spots, because their explanation wasn't clear, etc.
Often enough the end of one quest, and the start of the follow up blend in each other. Meaning the first one hasn't really ended, when already an NPC appears, talks over the voice of the one trying to finish the quests and recruits you for the follow up. And you have to do it now.
And creative solutions are sometimes possible - or they are not, but you have no idea how to figure that out in advance.
3.) Skyrim has never been subject to any kind of testing. One would think, all the players having played the game would provide that, but quite obvious, most of their reports and experiences have been dumped in the toilet. The game suffers from so many stupidities, its absolutely unthinkable, that the creators themselves have ever played it.
Its quite a nice game otherwise. There is good in it. It can be entertaining, But be prepared to be frustrated too.
And also be prepared: It is not Morrowind.
...but nowhere near as good as everyone makes it out to be.
The writing is boring, the game holds your hand at every turn, the animations feel stiff, the magic system has been dumbed down into the stone age, and the guilds are unsatisfying.
You play as the mythical hero - Dragonborn - which you are revealed, and universally accepted to be ten minutes into the main quest. Yet despite this, all of the npcs still treat you like a little fool even when you've beaten all the major adventures, gotten all the godly artefacts, and walk around with endgame-tier gear. Morrowind made you work for the recognition, Oblivion too (to a lesser extent), but in Skyrim the recognition system is just broken.
The game world is beautiful, this much I can agree with, and I love the verticality, but the horizontality is so scaled down that you can't take two steps outside of a major settlement without running into a cave, an old fort, or a "lost" ancient ruin. While it was the same in Oblivion, it just didn't feel as crammed.
But the game can be fun. You've got crafting, you can turn into a man-bat and a werewolf, and the companions are a major improvement over the ones in prior games (I particularly like how they comment on the places you visit, yes, it gets repetitive, but is still nice).
The game's major problem was being pushed out the door in a raw state, and you'd think with all the re-releases and remasters, Bethesda would actually bring back the cut content and finish the unfinished one to make this game truly great, but no, because the people will eat it up anyhow, and modders will do all the hard work for free. And don't even get me started on the Creation Club, which is just a rip-off (pay money for stuff you can get for free from modders?).
Overall, I stand by what I've said: a pretty game that can be fun, but was crippled from the get-go, and the developers are more concerned with money than with actually fixing it. Thanks, Todd!
Screw Steam, after the second time they allowed Bugthesda to jinx my Skyrim game and mods with their unwanted Creation Club money grab I’m done with them.
If they would at least allow us to opt out of these updates and downloads I wouldn’t mind, but they knowingly allowed them to happen not caring how many legacy mods and games it would break.
If Bugthesda’s first attempt to throttle the free modding community with the release of Anniversary Edition wasn’t bad enough, now they are doing it again just to,push their cash cow once more.
Now with this latest unwanted and unneeded update, NO MORE!
PS…
And of course, they also seem to now want to do the same to Fallout4 starting in 2024,
Yeah, no.
I’d neve bought a game from GOG before, but seeing that with them you actually own the game and can even play off line, I think if found my new place to buy.
I’ll even wait however long it takes till a game comes out here before I ever buy from Steam again.
