Description
The year is 1962 and the Cold War has the nation gripped by fear. A top-secret government unit called The Bureau begins investigating a series of mysterious attacks by an enemy more powerful than communism. As agent Carter, call the shots, pull the trigger and lead your squad in a gripping third-person tactical shooter set within a covert war to protect humanity from an otherworldly enemy.

Light Plasma Pistol
Early Bureau research into outsider weapons technology has yielded promising results in the form of a prototype light plasma pistol. Not as bulky as its Outsider predecessor, this compact weapon fires condensed bolts of plasma and boasts a vastly improved rate-of-fire, giving players an early edge in the secret war for humanity’s survival.

CodeBreakers
A top secret government communications facility responsible for intercepting and decoding the enemy’s transmissions has gone radio-silent. In a desperate attempt to turn the tides of the secret war, Special Agent Carter and his squad must investigate the incident, eliminate any threats, and make contact with personnel in order to bring the facility back online and make sense of the mysterious code.

Hangar 6 R&D
In the days leading up to the events of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, Agent Nico DaSilva volunteers for a series of dangerous secret experiments to identify and treat a terrifying new pathogen. Maximize your combat skills and push your team to its limits to protect a friend from his own hallucinated terrors.

Short spinoff cover shooter

Development controversy aside, how does this game ACTUALLY play? It's... decent. There's a workable story in there, but the campaign is just too short - within a handful of missions you're already storming an alien world. The designers should've fully embraced the whole "prequel" thing instead of apparently arguing and finally compromising with the feedback they got. Make a great game and people WILL buy it - who cares about the few diehard haters. Releasing a crap game only proves them right. Unfortunately the game isn't good enough. As mentioned above, it's short. There's barely 3 tiers of equipment, and the majority of upgrades are just backpacks which each give a different passive. There's no research - which MIGHT have worked if there was something else to do, like perhaps expand on the whole Red Threat thing that was simply relegated to lore. There are so few "side missions" I was initially afraid it wasn't possible to level up the rest of the squad, but turns out the level cap is so damn low it doesn't matter, not to mention the squad cap itself is literally just a dozen or so soldiers. You can't save, the game autosaves... which might've worked except for the fact you need to explore the base to unlock stuff. So how do you know this exploration was saved? I had to resort to fully finish exploring then launching the next mission and quitting there, to make sure I didn't lose any progress. No manual saving is idiotic design, not to mention if it bugs out you're completely hosed. There's decisions to make in the final few missions which determines the outcome - and since you can't save, you can't view the other endings unless you REPLAY THE WHOLE GAME despite the choices only relying on the last hour of play. WTF Design issues aside, it's actually decent in action. I found myself wanting more levels despite the shallowness. It feels like a tech demo instead of a full game. This game isn't a total loss, but don't buy it unless STEEPLY discounted.

Repetitive gameplay

Since the beginning of the game, you note that the game will put you through a very straight path, which you just follow, kill the enemies, and unravel the story (which isn't anything great). The tactics part of the game is the only good part if you're really a fan of it, but otherwise, the game got repetitive and boring pretty fast for me.

Give it another chance

I loved The Bureau back when it originally came out in 2013, but I wasn't entirely sure what my experience with the game would be in 2018. Now after having replayed and sinking 40+ hours across Steam and GOG I can safely say this is one of my all-time favorite games. Commanding your squad and dominating the area by throwing down turrets, helper drones, and mind controlling enemies is a pure joy. Engagements are often tense and exhilarating on max difficulty where you will more often than not be constantly on the move and reshuffling the positions of your squad so they aren't obliterated by one of the many hulking opponents in the game. The lack of a complete pause when giving out orders, instead applying a slow-down effect where you can still be damaged, causing you to think fast, only increases the tension of combat. On top of that what really hooked me was the story and world design. Everything is played completely straight, you're never taken out of it with horrible comic relief characters. The vivid depiction of 1960s America ravaged by an alien invasion is taken seriously, which allows for a lot of quality character interactions and story developments. It's really quite immersive. If you account for The Bureau going through and surviving multiple reboots during development, which unfortunately turned it into more of a lower budget title, and the fact that the regular XCOM series is still kicking, then you might very well find something special here with this one.

Good game!

It's a third person squad shooter with abilities. The combat kinda plays like Mass Effect. The story and acting is decent. My biggest complaint is the horrible AI of my squad.

Decent but a bit too repetitive

Bring on the sci-fi B movie cheese. While The Bureau starts out with a bang, it kind of ends up becoming a bit too rote towards the latter part of the game. The continued combat encounters simply become too samey-feeling. So much so I ended up turning down the difficulty at the end so I could simply conclude the story. Its lower-budget status can also be seen in some at times truly bizarre facial animations. All in all, I don't regret my time spent on playing the game, but I wouldn't put it on anybody's must-play list. It's one of the many enjoyable-but-forgettable titles.
