How did the world get so ugly so fast? We were almost there, and then Gomez got scragged by a heavy turret and Slugger learned the difference between horseshoes and hand grenades. That left Rossi and me.
"There's the dropship!" Rossi screams. "We're outta here, Nik!"
"Rossi wait!" But it's too late....

"Rossi wait!" But it's too late. A particle beam turns Rossi into a smear on the landscape. The pirate sniper makes a quick sprint for cover... not quick enough.
"Get aboard, Nikola!" your radio squawks. Suddenly, a hulking tank crests the hill launching a deadly hail of missiles at your position.
The radio crackles: "Nikola? Nikola, are you there? Come in Squad Leader..."

I had this and the expansion - great open maps, intense agile armored suit combat, some rather hard missions, very cool lore. I really love this game, glad to see it on GOG.
The framerate slows to a slide show when there's more than two enemies on screen. The resolution is slightly higher than a tamagotchi. The audio in cutscenes and the menu ost constantly pops. No quality of life improvements like a control configuration menu. I'd like to talk about the gameplay, but honestly, if this was the best game ever made it would still be unplayable in this state.
Remember people: just because it is in GOG doesn't mean it can work without a fuzz. Or properly.
Just what is going on here? Torrents of 5-star rave reviews, of the "could only be paid for" quality! But why would the developers of an ancient 1996 title bother to pay for reviews?!
Then come the shills, fanbois and toadys posrepping the lot. They nearly all have 100% posrep ratings! (Not anymore though - they all have at least *one* negrep!). Yet what few "less than raving" reviews there are, are thoroughly negrepped. Like this one will be. GOG need to WAKE UP and remove negrepping - like Steam have done already, years ago!
5-star raving fanboism must be some kind of mental illness going around!
Sorry, the game itself.
It's mediocre. Simple as that. Though back in 1997 I did have a demo of this, and was slightly impressed back then. These days it is just "PFEH"!
Graphics wise, it tried to do more than the technology of the time allowed effectively, so like all mid-90's games using the then new "textured 3d scenery" it looks ugly as a bulldog's ass.
Gameplay wise, it worked ok, but many scenarios were rather stupidly difficult!
Units are few, and boringly generic, such as "light tank". Both factions use the same units.
