Description
The year 2087 is upon us — a future where genetic engineering is the norm, the addictive Trance has replaced almost any need for human interaction, and an omnipresent AI named Central powers the city. Its all-seeing CEL police force keeps tabs on everyone, including three people who are about to meet their maker.

*Charlie Regis, an agent of the city’s all-seeing secret police, finds himself blackmailed with the lives of his unborn children. Pushed to the limits by his deceit and his past, how far is he willing to go to save his legacy?
*Latha Sesame, a jobless agoraphobe addicted to the Trance, has become targeted for assassination. Without knowing who to trust, she must face the dangers of “meatspace” and survive a fate that has invisibly ruled her entire life.
*Max Lao, a tech-savvy case officer who joined CEL to forget her criminal past. Now she finds herself torn between two loyalties. When she’s asked to apprehend her best friend and partner, she must choose to follow her friend or the law.
As these three struggle to save themselves, they will soon discover a string of conspiracies that threatens not only their lives, but everything they think they know.
  • Control three characters - trance addict Latha Sesame (and her internet alter ego - Mandala), grizzled cop Charlie Regis, and tech-savvy detective Max Lao.
  • Explore a futuristic, cyberpunk city (and its digital counterpart in virtual reality)
  • Original soundtrack and full voice-acting
  • DVD-style commentary and bloopers

Needs a "Special Edition"

I really enjoyed the world and gameplay, especially the robot personality modifications. The puzzles & inventory usage were logical and very well balanced... probably the best I've encountered. I am happy to report that I did not need to consult a walkthrough. The soundtrack also deserves high praise. Occasionally the story's pacing and voice acting made dramatic moments fall flat, but most of the time the characters were interesting and enjoyable. As much as I enjoyed the art style and lighting, I really disliked the low-res graphic-- it kept me from feeling excited about the game. I'm not asking for full 3D 4K here, just a solid 2.5D 1080p like the Mokey Island Special Editions would be a huge improvement! I hope to see another game in the Technobabylon universe in the future, just with much more pixel density.

Better than games it's compared to.

People wax nostalgic about classic adventure games so much, it sometimes becomes nauseating. Of course, they are classics for a reason. But to put them on an unreachable pedestal doesn't do anyone any good. These old games are games of their time, with various limitations of their time: they may utilize those limits to the max, and even transcend them, but they were not created to be perfect be-all and end-all of quests. Case in point: Technobabylon. This game is extremely competently written, and bring the "pixelated 2D quest" genre way closer to a full-blown movie script than its predecessors. It has a large scope that's unhindered by disk space limitations. Its art can stand toe-to-toe with any adventure game classic and not bat an eye. It has not one, but several large character arcs that are explored very thoroughly. It also has the traditional look-at quips and farcical bits that are inseparable from the classic adventure game genre. It even has a well-directed and paced ending, which is frankly rare for any adventure games. It may sound like I'm fanboying over the game, but I'm really not. It's not the apotheosis of adventure games, just like those classics weren't. But compared to modern variations on the classic theme, it really stands out. It doesn't just "reference" or "invoke" some tropes of good old adventure games, it goes all in, to simply make a good adventure game — as big or bigger than any of the classics, no less flashy or well-built, standing on its own (and not as an homage). I'm afraid I can't say the same about other brilliant Wadjet Eye offerings like Gemini Rue, Shardlight, Blackwell series - these are great, but not as ambitious; shorter, smaller, more barren, less grand.

Max, Charlie and Mandala - with synths!

A great story to this great adventure with quite a long playtime - around 10hrs. If you like classic adventures with rather good logical puzzles than grab this piece. And if you also like cyberpunk, than definitely grab this piece. If you like being a detective than also grab this one. If you like droids and synths - than also grab this piece. And if you want to see a future of the AI - this game might give you more than one possible solutions...
