good roguelike, but simplistic graphics

I enjoyed this game a bit, but i have to admit, it was more fun and interesting with dungeon of dredmor. a graphic overhaul with some animation would be welcome, as it is, it's really, well like playing a paper game. It's ok for a while, but i cannot spend my life on this :) not expensive and nice to try anyway

Good...but misses several marks.

Tales of Maj'eyal is a strange thing for a roguelike. It has multiple game modes, a persistent overworld, and several expansions. These, I applaud. The flow & feel, I have reservations for. See, TOME has a loot flow a lot like Diablo. You get a lot of items, and most of it is junk. The problem I have is that the weighting of items no matter the classes I've picked seem to be psi favoured. With unerring regularity have I seen their weapons reach the highest tiers while other classes are still in the middle. That aside, even when you do something you -think- you might be interested in, by default the presentation of stats is rather opaque. Not only are there often too many stats presented; but there's often no way to readily intuit if an item you're comparing is factually better. Speaking of chaff, the variety and distribution of mobs leaves a lot to be desired. Even in the upper levels you'll still be encountering ROUS equivalents, often leaving you in an unguarded state of mind while waiting for various abilities to recharge. Suddenly, an elite. Elites are the Uniques of TOME, and Bosses are the Super Uniques. Oft with their appearance is a barrage of detrimental effects that most classes have no counter for. Be it frozen in ice, put to sleep, or worse. This isn't where excitement happens, this is more hoping your character can shake off the effect or you've got a rune handy to keep you alive. Minor aside: A lot of the bootscreens are a special kind of ugly. I can only hope that Darkgod had a discount artist. But that brings me to a point; a lot of the art in this game is busy; being detailed while not actually telling anything. If its tiles that make it hard to tell where the floors are or overly detailed walls that obscure doors, there's a lot that can be done to make it better. All in all, Tome 4 is something which I've sunk a lot of time into, but I'm not sure I've had "fun". Honestly, it's more akin to passing time or letting myself zone out.
