Description

Superliminal is a first-person puzzle game based on forced perspective and optical illusions. Puzzles in this game give you a sense of the unexpected. Players need to change their perspective and think outside the box to wake up from the dream.

WAKE UP

As you fall asleep with the TV on at 3AM, you remember catching a glimpse of the commercial for Dr. Pierce’s Somnasculpt dream therapy program. By the time you open your eyes, you’re already dreaming - beginning the first stages of this experimental program.

PERCEPTION IS REALITY

Explore a dream world where everything is exactly as it seems. Tread carefully as the world slowly unravels around you and subverts your expectations. What you see isn’t always precisely what you get.

MAN VS MACHINE

In this fully-voiced adventure, Dr Glenn Pierce is doing his questionable best to guide you home and out of the dreamscape. His artificial intelligence assistant, however, is having trouble understanding exactly how you’re here at all, and has other plans for you.

DEVELOPER COMMENTARY

We’ve added an extensive developer commentary throughout the game, so you can learn the secrets and history behind the game’s development.

CHALLENGE MODE

The overwhelming response from the speedrunning community to Superliminal inspired us to add a new Challenge Mode, which will score you per-level on metrics such as time to finish, grabs, and jumps.

Part of the Puzzle Holy Trinity

This game came out swinging, and for me filled the last vacant spot of the Puzzle games Holy trinity, The Witness, The Talos Principle and Superliminal. This game is cleverly done, has an amazing perspective on gaming positive estimulation, with such an inventive concept, soothing soundtrack, the controls are smooth, and the premise is a teaser for sure. For me, the only downside of this game is being too short. But it is one mind bending good time and went straight to the third spot of the Holy trinity of Puzzle games. Don't blink, buy it.

Brillant concept, limited implementation

Superliminal is a very clever puzzle game, using forced perspective to create counter-intuitive solutions that require the player to rethink their physics assumptions. The concept is excellent, and along with great aesthetics and a chillin' soundtrack, makes for a pleasant and satisfying game experience. But it is quite limited in its implementation. Too many puzzles feel redundant, and the game is suprisingly conservative in how many variations on the puzzles it is willing to take. It never reaches Portal aspirations. The whitespace sequence lost me a bit - cool visuals but a lot of feelings of pointlessness. Still, for anyone looking for a twist on the puzzle genre, this is a must play.

A Little Perspective

Pros: + Offers a unique twist on the puzzle genre. + Interesting atmosphere throughout the game. + Interesting (but predictable) story. + Ran natively in ultrawide resolution (3440x1440). + Easy to pick up and never punishingly difficult. + Good music and voice acting. + Has a positive, "real world" message about solving problems in your life by changing your perspective. + No bugs or crashes of any kind. Cons: - The ending drags on a bit too long. - Offers a fairly low challenge (as was my experience; yours may be different). - Could use more variations on the mechanics in the game. Once you figure things out, there's not much more to learn, which contributes to how easy I thought that this was. - Like most puzzle games, it's really only good for one playthrough. Also of note is that it's a very short game. I don't consider that a negative in a puzzle game as puzzles get tiring for me after a while, but someone who loves puzzle games might be let down by the length. Two full playthroughs, the first one blind and a second one to listen to the developer commentary, only took me about 4 hours. You could definitely speedrun this in under an hour if you're into that sort of thing (it even includes a speedrun mode of sorts). I recommend this for fans of first person puzzle platformers (think: Portal) or anyone who's looking for a casual game for an afternoon playthrough.

Clever Game

I do plan to play again as I missed quite a few hidden pawns. And my sense of exploration diminished if I played too long in one sitting so I missed some explorable areas. As other reviewers have said, it starts out strong but the last couple of levels became tedious. I got stuck in one area and after that I was never sure if I was stuck or just had to keep searching white or black space. One unusual thing I experienced was an every 60-second mouse lag/accelleration. I got used to it but it was annoying through the game. My mouse would hang and then suddenly it would accellerate across whatever space I was in. I found some discussion related to Mac users but I am on a Windows 10 PC so not sure what that was all about. I tried some general fixes but nothing worked. I have not experienced this with any other game, application.

Attempt to create a new Portal

A relatively simple puzzle game with minimalist design built around a unique mechanics. Reminds you of something, doesn't it? Sadly, despite the developers have managed to create a nicely working game mechanics, therefore did the most important part of the game well, and, at least at first, created interesting puzzles, they have failed miserably to arrange it into a plot. It wouldn't be a big deal if Superliminal was all about puzzles alone like Portal appeared at first, but the plot plays an important role here! Not to mention that when the game is 60-70% complete even puzzles themselves become boring and annoying. By the last third of the game end I was just pushing "W" waiting for the next disappearing floor (a trick that can work once, maybe twice, but not 10 times). After all this resentment it may be surprising that I give the game 4/5. Still, I liked the mechanics and if there is a sequel with a new, more profound, scriptwriter I'd gladly buy it.
