Description

Superliminal is a first-person puzzle game based on forced perspective and optical illusions. Puzzles in this game give you a sense of the unexpected. Players need to change their perspective and think outside the box to wake up from the dream.

WAKE UP

As you fall asleep with the TV on at 3AM, you remember catching a glimpse of the commercial for Dr. Pierce’s Somnasculpt dream therapy program. By the time you open your eyes, you’re already dreaming - beginning the first stages of this experimental program.

PERCEPTION IS REALITY

Explore a dream world where everything is exactly as it seems. Tread carefully as the world slowly unravels around you and subverts your expectations. What you see isn’t always precisely what you get.

MAN VS MACHINE

In this fully-voiced adventure, Dr Glenn Pierce is doing his questionable best to guide you home and out of the dreamscape. His artificial intelligence assistant, however, is having trouble understanding exactly how you’re here at all, and has other plans for you.

DEVELOPER COMMENTARY

We’ve added an extensive developer commentary throughout the game, so you can learn the secrets and history behind the game’s development.

CHALLENGE MODE

The overwhelming response from the speedrunning community to Superliminal inspired us to add a new Challenge Mode, which will score you per-level on metrics such as time to finish, grabs, and jumps.

Cool, but not worth full price

This game is literally a piece of art. It isn't "useful", it costs way more than what most people would be willing to pay for it, but it sure looks pretty. This is essentially a puzzle game that deals with perspective. As the game says, perception is reality: if you pick something up and hold it next to your face, it looks big. But when you let it go, it really has become "big" - perception becomes reality. It is very clever and will confuse, astound and surprise you a few times. The developers really nailed that aspect. But the novelty wears off quickly. This trick is like, 90% of the game, so it quickly becomes obvious that the developers ran out of ideas some time after the first or second level. Puzzles start becoming less and less interesting. Toward the end, it feels like a chore - it is no longer fun. But before you know it, it is over and you sort of go like "that's it?" and feel kinda cheated because that first part? That was amazing. It feels like a "demo" of sorts with a really bad story. None of the mechanics are really explored to what I consider to be "full potential". Puzzles never rise above the level of "novelty". As a game, it feels kinda half-baked. Aside from the story, there is a challenge mode which is basically the story mode but with "complete this part within a certain limit of moves" kind of thing, so nothing really exciting. There is also, surprisingly, a multiplayer mode, but it is an afterthought - it's great that it is there, but it won't hold your attention for long (it can be enjoyed solo). There is also a "beta" map editor which lets you create some small-ish levels with a rather unintuitive interface. So, if I was judging this objectively, as a "game", this isn't a good game - it is short, potential is not fulfilled, modes other than story mode are an afterthought - the list goes on and on. But as an one-off "experience"? Or as "art"? It is definitely 5 stars. I'm giving it a 4 because anything lower would be too harsh.

Okay, this IS special....

Just finished the game and while it really plays a lot like Portal (in general you are walking from test chamber to test chamber and try to figure out a way to continue), there is this special clue: The game is full of optic illusions and impossibilitys - because you are in a dream and everything is possible. You might expect the unexpected but in this game you also have to think in an unexpected way to solve the puzzles. The game does contain a sort of story - it even has a deeper solution to what this is all about, but the game does not focus on the story. So play it for the puzzles and for an amazing ride into crazyland and not for the story and you will enjoy it a lot. The game looks nice and specially in some of the later levels the developers went overboard and created quite surreal areas which really enhances the feeling that you are in fact in a dream. The game was buttersmooth for me and I did not have any problems with the controls (used keyboard + mouse and the keys as well as the gamepad buttons are fully rebindable). The game also offers enough graphic options. Like I said, the game does not focus on story, but it has narration in it which is subtitled in different languages. I tested the German one and was really satisfied (found two tiny bugs in the end which I told the devs so they might even get fixed). What really amazes me is that they even subtitled the developer commentary in different languages so I might replay the game with these turned on again. I purchased it for about 13 euros and imo it is well worth the asking price even though one playthrough is not much longer than 5 hours max. I don't remember any other game that was so "different" so I'd still recommend it despite the rather short experience.

Fun and entertaining, for a brief while.

It's hard to find a game that's original on a conceptual level, and while Superluminal isn't by any means a breakthrough or substantially reinventing the puzzle/logic games - it is different, often times surprisignly so. It's so rare that it's certainly refreshing, by all means. The ending comes a tad out of nowhere. It leaves you yearning for more, but in hindsight the levels have been getting stale for a bit. Basically the game teaches you to think not so much "outside of the box", as.. use the box to fish? That is as long as you realize the box was never there in the first place - so maybe it's good the plot/puzzles ended before it became a chore. All in all, it remains fun and entertaining throughout - a definite must-play for everyone!

Thinking outside the box (literally)

Wow, what an amazing game. As someone who: (a) loves puzzle games, and (b) loves games with novel/innovative mechanics or that try to do something different, this game definitely hit the spot. While a few of the puzzles were somewhat tricky, the solutions to them always made sense, and the game makes you feel clever when you realize what you need to do to solve a given puzzle. I only wish there were MORE puzzles; a few of the levels consisted of too many empty corridors for my taste (I get that the corridors functioned to add to the atmosphere/story of the game, but I wish they had found a way to incorporate more puzzles into those sections). And the ending...OMG I was not expecting that in a puzzle game. I won't spoil it; I'll just say that it definitely gave me "the feels". :-)

Neat but could've been better

The game starts too easy and when it gets hard it does it in convoluted ways which aren't fun. However it has some really nice moments and I love these kinds of games.
