Fun Game, Would Recommend

So I got this game on giveaway last year, but it never really piqued my interest, but this last week I decided to give it a try and yeah, I shouldn't have slept on this one for so long. It's a great game. I never played the first Steamworld Dig game, so I can't compare it to that, but this game seems to start where that one left off plotwise. The main character's BFF has disappeared, and you've heard a rumor that they may be in this town that you're just about to roll into. On your way into town there's an earthquake and you fall into an underground pit, and stumble over somekind of death cult, Anyways, after getting out of that predicament you finally get into town and learn that these quakes have been happening a lot recently, and someone is stuck underground in the mine, and you think it might be your friend, so you're determined to go look for him. The gameplay loop is you go digging trying to get the next plot point, while collecting ore, which you'll bring up to town to sell to make money to upgrade your stuff, which you'll use to go do more digging. Along the way you'll uncover secret areas, ancient artifacts (collectables), new abilities, all while trying to find your friend, uncover the secret of these earth quakes that keep happening, and avoiding death cultists and the like. Solid game, nothing to complain about here. The controls feel a little floaty, and the combat isn't very satisfying, but it's all manageable. I mean this game is no Hollow Knight, but if the worst thing that I can say about it is that it's no Hollow Knight, then you're still left with a great game. I managed to complete the game and get 100% of the secrets in around 15 hours of gameplay.

Core gameplay too repetitive

I have to say the tutorial and first 20 minutes feel exciting, but as soon as I hit that mine shaft, and saw exactly where most of my time is going to be spent, my heart sank a little. Part of the fun of metroidvanias is when you find that crucial new ability that you know can be used in that one place you saw 2 hours ago is supposed to excite you, which sadly I just didn't get from Steamworld Dig 2, my only feeling being a purely utilitarian acceptance that this will be useful to crack a rock in a slightly different way in my inevitable slog downwards. The caves did a decent enough job at turning abilities into a puzzle of coordination, but the excitement is few and far between, with not enough variation to give yourself a feeling of momentum and progression. There are adjoining environments that do give you a feeling of what the game could have been, with labyrinthine tunnels and varied challenges that test your understanding of the mechanics, but most of the game it's just you and that big old tunnel, and the only way is down, down, down.

Played on the Switch, Loved it

The first was kind of a sleeper hit, but this one took it to a whole new level. They totally built upon the idea, and made a game full of content. The controls are tight, the graphics and art direction are very unique and fun to look at, and the soundtrack is very engaging. Highly recommend it!

An improvement in every way

...Or at least that's my opinion. Whereas the first game in the series was a short and simple loop of digging deeper and upgrading equipment, with a handful of metroidvania-style upgrades and platforming puzzles scattered throughout, SteamWorld Dig 2 skews the balance much more heavily towards metroidvania. There's still plenty of digging to be done, but progression rewards have a much greater impact on play (particularly movement) and puzzles tend to be more frequent and elaborate. You may find this disappointing if you liked the original for mainly being a low-effort progression treadmill, but if you're like me and were left wanting for more complexity, this game more than satisfies. I'll also note that, whereas I personally found the music of the first game to be lackluster and forgettable (with the exception of the title screen theme), I adore every track in SteamWorld Dig 2 and frequently found myself humming them both whilst playing as well as between sessions. Just an immeasurable improvement overall, but that's obviously very dependent on personal taste. If you want more of the first game's cycle of digging with an increase in platforming challenges and movement complexity, then I recommend this game.
