Great Continuation of Steamworld Dig

Just like how Spelunky 2 is the perfect continuation of Spelunky, Steamworld Dig 2 is the perfect continuation of Steamworld Dig. You do not have to play the first game to enjoy this one but it continues from the first game where Dot tries to find her Rusty from the first game. The gameplay is just like the first but there are new upgrades and mechanics.

A Welcome Surprise

I ran into issues with Dig 1 and so jumped into Dig 2 on the assumption that it resolved those issues, and that it was some sort of robotic Terraria. It is not. It is a Metroidvania with digging, and the digging itself is surprisingly nuanced (You will need to plan carefully if you want to get everything). This alone, combined with the exploration and the cheesy worldbuilding would make it worth the playthrough alone, but when you start adding in some of the darker parts of the game and some of the genre bending, it begins to become something really special. I'm not giving it 5 stars because it's a transcendent masterpiece, I'm giving it 5 stars because it's a delightful romp. It's definitely worth your money, even at full price.

Well, you do get a jetpack, I guess

Reading the other reviews, I thought I'd be in for a totally different experience, but nah. It sure is a standard sequel. Just like the first game, you dig progressively down a mine shaft until you reach the bottom, at which point you start doing the same in a few other areas. You'll run into several separate challenge rooms, which are again the highlight of the game since there's actual structure to them. Granted the overworld this time has a few gimmicks to it that make it a more interesting experience, but such things are few and far between. Perhaps the biggest difference is the change to your movement options. Unlike the first game, none of them use any water or consumables. All water is used for in this game is two situational tools. This means that you'll probably never run into a situation where you cannot climb back up because of the way you chose to dig, which happened to me more than once in the first game. Because of this, you don't have to plan your path down, which makes the game more mindless. You also don't really get the sense that you're playing as a "Steambot" Consumable items have been removed entirely. No more buying your own checkpoints to set anywhere. I kinda missed that. Orbs have also been replaced with upgrade cogs, which are generally a much more rewarding secret to find. I was more motivated to go out of my way and explore, especially with the easier movement. There were a few more boss fights as well this time, but none left much of an impression. Nor did the music, the graphics or the story. And that kinda sums up the game, and the franchise in general. It's perfectly average. I wouldn't pay $20 for it if I were you.

Solid sequel.

At it's core Steamworld Dig 2 is a metroidvania. You've got upgrades, platforming and secrets. Lots of secrets. The artstyle has become a staple of the series and is visually pleasing. Personally I found the soundtrack a bit underwhelming after Steamworld Heist's amazing OST by Steam Powered Giraffe. The pacing is great throughout the whole game and while it did feel a bit too easy even with a couple difficulty settings turned on it was still fun. One major problem I have is with one optional endgame challenge that feels just too ridiculously hard. It's like biting into a rock when chewing a tasty piece of pie. Why is this here? Who thought that this is fun? The challenge is optional but is required for 100% completion and is so much harder than the rest of the game that it feels alien compared to the rest of the game. As someone who likes to be a completionist this really left a sour taste in my mouth, even if I enjoyed the rest of the game immensely.

Good casual game, liked first one better

I liked the first game for just a Rusty robot going exploring in the mines. This time you get a plot where the girly robot Dot comes to save the world and figure out what all the bad things came from what Rusty did. Graphics and all that is fine and fits the game nicely, just like the first one. It's quite short, about 10 hours gameplay for me. That's fine for me, just something to remember. Same type of digging and gameplay as the first one. Maybe gone a bit more gimmicky towards the end with the upgrades, but overall quite fine. I felt the story was a bit meh but the gameplay was fine, and could play it in shorter bits and checkpoint easily to save progress. Good for some casual entertainment. I'd look for a good sale though, that's where I got it.
