Voyager, but somehow more boring
Starcom isn't necessarily a bad game, but maybe it wasn't the right game for me? You're steering a ship about and exploring planets and anomalies wherever you go. You encounter alien races and make friends or enemies of them. This is everything you could want out of a space game - on paper. The implementation of Starcom is skin deep. You go out and collect resources amidst all the trekking, then return to base to build a bigger ship and research tech, rinse and repeat. Combat is equally shallow and is often more of a chore than it is rewarding - especially with infinitely respawning bad guys. The exploration is the high point and main draw of the game. But many of the things you encounter, though sometimes interesting, are too often trivial, irrelevent, and don't lead to anything worthwhile. At some point, I stopped caring about the story and world, and only cared about finishing the game. But now I've reached a point where I have no idea of where to go or what to do - and I have no motivation to continue any further.

Strong storytelling drives the game
This is not a game for someone who wants to deeply strategize and maximize every aspect of their play. Instead, the game combines very cool exploration and discovery with some puzzle solving to figure out where to go and what to do to deliver a great story. Over time, more and more background that has shaped the galaxy is revealed to you as you form your theories of just what the heck is going on. It has a really satisfying conclusion, good dramatic structure, and interesting (but light) gameplay to get you there. Overall, if you want story in service of gameplay, this isn't right for you, but if you want gameplay in service of great story, this *is* the game for you.

Great game marred by obscure quests
First off, the story and characters are really good and keep your focus for a while. The gameplay loop is that satisfying blend of exploration, deep horrific space, unknown aliens, battles, upgrades, customization and finding cool things. Then for me at least, came the late game, where you're supposed to go on a massive collect-athon, except I had 20 quests with extremely vague hints and a very vast galaxy to navigate. The last three hours of my playing time was basically me telling myself that I just needed to make one more pass to find some obscure clue to figure it all out and see the ending. Nope. I'm throwing in the towel. There's something to be said for excessive hand-holding, but this game definitely needs more of that.
