Fun the first time, poor replay value

I first played this game back in September 2008, when it was first released on Xbox 360. I had forgotten how good this game looked for the time and I have to give LucasArts credit for the convincing cloth simulation they used, considering many games I played in later years still had characters wearing robes and skirts that looked like they were glued to their pants. There's more depth to the combat system than is apparent at first glance, too. At it's core it may be hack-and-slash with a dose of powers for flair but it does reward creativity. The destructible environment aspect was hyped a lot prior to release, though honestly, in 2019, it's nothing to write home about. They are a gimmick that are mainly showcased in the first two levels. After that, it's limited to destroying obstacles to progress. As far as enemy behaviors, they'll sometimes grab onto a ledge when at risk of falling or will grab an ally in a last ditch effort to save themselves from your Grip power, though that's really the extent of the realistic behaviors that was also hyped prior to release. The story was a decent addition to the old Expanded Universe that sought to tell the story of how the Rebel Alliance was formed. The voice acting is extremely well done and the original characters introduced are for the most part likeable, though there is little reason to play the game after watching the canon light side ending beyond getting the alternate dark side ending, trying out the new costumes, maxing out combos, talents and powers and completing all the secondary objectives. The only alternate gameplay mode is a series of simulated battles against the AI which offer no in-game rewards and the three DLC missions don't really offer anything new in terms of gameplay, with the only selling point being that two of them follow a "what if" setting after the dark side ending. Play it for the story, but there is little to see and do after the credits roll.

DONT PLAY ON THE PC!!! HORRIBLE PORT JOB

I wanted to go back and play the different star wars series games and figured I'd start with this one. Big BIG mistake. The story is great as is most of the star wars games but this was built for consoles first and foremost. They tried to shoehorn it onto the PC and it was just an all around horrible job. From the janky commands to the terrible timing. Its just not fun. I finished it but was not able to enjoy the gameplay at all because its such a pain to do the commands in the 'CORRECT' order your required to do for many of the bosses. If you mess up, you start all over from the begining of the sequence. They should have redone the controls when they decided to port to PC. Far FAR to many consoles that are ported to the pc are just absolute total garbage. If you are one of those that must have this then wait for it to be either free or less than $10 because any more than that and you've been taken. Again the story is really good, not sure how its supposed to squeeze into the original star wars story but meh its still enjoyable. Maybe just go watch the cut scenes on youtube.

Sub-par action game, just play JO2 or JA

Summary: For a game that came 7 years AFTER Jedi Outcast 2, it's a far worse game in almost every category. Be careful of the glowing positive reviews, as they may be clouded by nostalgic goggles. After glowing reviews I gave this game a a chance: Visuals + Music: What you'd expect from 2009. A bit messy looking at times. Music was great using some of the classics from the series, and the newly composed stuff fit in well. Voice acting: ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Vader was great. But the new emperor's voice was something between hilarious and cringey. Even the protagonist was hit and VERY miss. It's like one of the devs thought he did a great emperor impression and put himself in completely unaware of how bad he was. Story: Great idea, but not implemented the greatest. It felt rushed at times. New characters, new environments not seen before were positives. This should have been done as one of the prequels. Gameplay: This is most important, and I have to say, the gameplay is borderline bad. Enemies stunlocking you then just murdering you. Awkward saber combat (although flashy, it just feels limp. Saber does not kill in one swipe). QTE littered throughout. Boss battles, although they could have been awesome (showdowns in interesting locations), ended up being extremely aggravating, forcing you into specific actions, or the boss would just block everything and then murder you. The StarDestroyer takedown was tedious. In general the force which could have been great, feels a bit awkward. Controlling where you throw things doesn't work well. While I appreciate the sandboxy type environments which allow you to kill enemies in fun ways, you largely end up repeating the same thing to get through it. Sorry for the rant, but I'm just throwing out my feelings after beating the game. If I hadn't played Kyle Katarn's adventures, this could have been passable, but Outcast 2 and Academy are vastly superior. Pick this up on sale if you love Star Wars. It's worth a try nonetheless.

Ruined by Quick Time Events

the flow of combat is totally ruid by the QTEs peppering this game. an absolutely lazy game mechanic that adds nothing to a game. it doesn't help that it has a manual save option that send you back the the last autosave point so saving before a boss battle is irrelevant. i've been kiled by not being able to do the QTE, even though i've cleared everything on the screen and left the boss with next to zero health, while i was at full health. there's no skill or fun in that. it's just tedious and immersion breaking. i've actually spent more time re-doing QTEs on boss battles than fighting the actual boss. i haven;t got the best memory so really struggle with this. it's a shame because the combat is great and i did like the story but i would never play it again. it's been the only game i can remember that i was glad to finish it and uninstall it. a few times i nearly canned it and thought i'd have more fun watching the end on u-tube. wouldn't dream of getting the second one and totally understand why the force unleashed failed as a franchise.
