Good ideas die in lack of polish

To start with: I used an XBOX360 gamepad. One particular part of the game is completely unplayable with keyboard and mouse. I really like the idea of going wild with the force. This game definitely deliveres and when it all clicks, it really clicks very well. It is a lot of fun to go wild and cause mayhem and destruction. However, it rarely clicks. Most of the time you will be fighting with awful and/or boring level design, bugs and really, REALLY annoying sections. One in particular had me scream at the monitor (it has to do with "landing" a ship). It has been a very long time since I have been so frustrated with a game. This game is also very much a child of its time. So expect terrible QTEs everywhere, camera issues, horrible jumping puzzles and controls that sometimes just don't work as you expect them to. The second part to is far better really everything this game should have been (although by no means perfect). However, the plots are very tightly connected, so to understand the 2nd game it is wise to suffer through this one. In general the story here is good and well told. it fits well into the overall universe and and interesting enough to continue. So overall, can I recommend it? If you are a big Star Wars fan and interested in some more story and or interested in the 2nd game and you have played the jedi knight games already and want something else: yes If you want a fun experience as practically a god, but don't care much about Star Wars or the 2nd game in particular: Then it is a clear no. I believe this game could have been something special. Its all there: good story, good characters, good gameplay ideas... but is had been put together very poorly. To me, it was not woth the 6€ I bought it for.

Deeply flawed Hack'n Slash

Let's address the strong aspects first: In terms of presentation, Force Unleashed is top-notch. A beautiful score, competent voice acting and visuals which focus on a consistent art style rather than realism all add up. There are some dodgy textures and character models in cutscenes have aged poorly though. The PC version suffers from being a poor port, but at least I didn't notice any game-breaking bugs. Story-wise, there is much to enjoy: as Darth Vader's secret apprentice, you embark on a series of missions with main and side characters going through character arcs. In general you will notice many lovely details which help flesh out the game's atmosphere! Gameplay-wise we get a mixed bag with the awful outweighing the good. Lukas Arts wanted to create a Star Wars version of God of War but had no idea how a hack'n slash works. Some enemies can't be stunned once they started their attack animation, leading to you getting hit and being pummeled around ragdoll-style and while you yourself can't cancel your combos. Fighting tougher enemies becomes a pain as they can get a free hit if you started your attack to soon and they decided to attack moments later. As a result, some encounters will entice you to resort to cheap tactics, ruining much of the fun. Add to that a completely broken targeting system and a camera which fails to keep track of the action and you have a recipe for frustration. I could go on how mechanically broken the combat is and how ultimately it makes the game artificially difficult. It really is a shame, especially when considering the varied enemy roster. Switching from hard to normal difficulty is recommended and makes for an enjoyable powertrip but it won't save you from some poorly-designed bosses and sections. Verdict: If you are looking for a decent Hack'n Slash, stay away. Star Wars fans and everyone else willing to cut the game some slack can add 1 or 2 stars to the score and will find a mechanically flawed but enjoyable experience.

Hideous controls ruin the fun

Ok game, overall, but there are some glaring issues that make it far more frustrating to play than it ever should have been. The biggest issue is that the control scheme is terrible, both for movement and for combat. The 30 FPS cap allegedly contributes to this problem, but from what I can tell it's based more on insensible development decisions. There's something unpleasantly janky about general movement controls. Your character gets rapidly sucked down from his jump apex like he's suddenly magnetized to the ground. It's really off-putting. The game makes you rely on an auto-targeting system that only works some of the time. The force pull controls are horrendous, making you constantly lift and swipe your mouse, since that's the only control recognized to actually move things around. And the object throw controls rarely throw things in the direction you're trying to aim them. Many of your combat animations are overly dragged out, with an awkward stance-lock effect, and no flow or overlap between them, leaving odd pauses as you switch from one type of attack to another, which gives heavy enemies enormous opportunity to stun you out of a combo. And man, does this game like taking advantage of that badly designed attack flow by throwing hordes of enemies with homing projectiles at you, to repeatedly stun juggle your character! The cycle of waiting for your character to come out of his rag doll physics knock-back, just in time to get hit by another unavoidable projectile is the pinnacle of aggravation. And the inexplicable fixed-camera boss battles just showcase all these bad design decisions even more. This game came out in 2009, alongside games like Arkham Asylum, Bayonetta and Borderlands, all of which prove that decent character control was very achievable at the time. So the issue here seems to be lack of developer expertise more than anything else. It's a shame how much that ruins what would otherwise have been a much better game.

Great Star Wars game

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, is a great game for anyone you like "God of war" type games. You are a powerful force-wielder with almost no limits. The story is a bit flat, but okay for this type of game. But don't expect a deep type storyline here. The controls are okay for a 2008'ish game, but you still feel the age of the game sometimes. FPS is locked at 30FPS, unless you download the fix for this (highly recommended - and I recommend the 40FPS option, as the 50 or 60FPS option feels to fast and breaks some force powers). Graphics are a bit dated as well, but mostly the scenery-textures and not so much the characters. Movies are un-skippable and that's annoying when you just wanna have fun after initial completion (just delete/move everything from the "FMV" folder, and the movie sequences stop). And lastly, you can set your custom resolution by editing the CONFIG.XML in [%LOCALAPPDATA%\Aspyr\Star Wars The Force Unleashed] Just copy the line inside the brackets and paste it into your file manager, and press enter. Then you will land inside the correct folder, where the CONFIG.XML is. I'm currently playing this game with an xBox ONE controller, and have had no issues. I give this game a solid 4 out of 5.

Great game but basically abandonware

Don't get me wrong, this game plays great and I love playing as the apprentice of the great Lord Vader himself (no relation). I love the gameplay mechanics, voice acting and the graphics are great for its age. The costumisation is so good that I actually missed the times where you can get your game skins by actually playing the game.] However, the game does need some love and unfortunately I don't think that love will come from the devs any time soon (more like ever). And unfortunately that lack of care and love is not exclusive to this game, but virtually all old star wars games are basically abandonware at this point and it fall on you to fix it. The game only supports 1080p, it's locked at 30fps and the controls are a little more than janky when playing with keyboard and mouse. There are fixes for this though, thanks to the community. So this is my reccomendation - you should get the game at a discount, do a quick google search for the fixes I mentioned and enjoy the game. It is far superior to whatever EA is doing with this franchise anyway (with the exception of the last two games) and will no doubt put you in the Star Wars mood...
