Star Wars™: Rebel Assault

Rebel Forces have won their first battle against the dark side... But the war has only just begun!

As Rookie One, you are thrust into a 3D galaxy far, far away to crush the evil Empire, once and for all. Take your T16 Skyhopper on a training run through Beggar's Canyon... Then dodge asteroids and blast TIE fighters in a deep space rumble... tackle a fleet of menacing AT-ATs on the icy tundra of Hoth... and ultimately annihilate Vader and the evil Empire with a kamikaze trench run on the infamous Death Star.

Star Wars™: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire

The story opens in the vicinity of the Dreighton Nebula, where Rookie One is part of a Rebel scouting patrol. He's investigating disappearances of Rebel spacecraft near Dreighton, a region rich with mythology about vanishing spacecraft. Legends of the region go back to the days when early hyperspace travelers lost their bearings and disappeared in the currents, eddies, and storms of the nebula. during the Clone Wars, two opposing combat fleets, at the height of battle, were swallowed up by the Dreighton Nebula, leaving it as the battle's only true victor.

Featuring original, live-action Star Wars footage, Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire hosts a multitude of ground-breaking improvements, including intuitive and challenging arcade game play; fifteen land, sky and space missions; an original Star Wars story; full-Screen high-quality video; four skill levels from easy to hard; a digital John Williams Star Wars soundtrack; and authentic sound effects by Skywalker Sound.

Unplayable

Rebel Assault is completely broken. The controls are entirely too sensitive. Even if you drop the framerate and difficulty to get pass Beggar's Canyon, you then encounter the awful aiming controls in the other stages. The second game is moderately more playable, but ultimately was much better on the 32-bit Playstation console port, so if you really want to play the second game use the methods available to you to play that one instead. I'm really concerned with GoG knowingly selling broken unplayable games. Their should at least be a warning or disclaimer on the game page. If I could get a refund, I would do so.

Difficulty sways to the extremes

As a preface. I do not own this game through GOG, and through Steam instead. I came to GOG hoping to see if their version had controller compatibility because trying to play some levels becomes nearly impossible without a joystick, specifically the millenium falcon escape sequence in chapter 3 of Rebel Assault 2. If at any point you lose the center position for your mouse, you'll just start ramming into the wall over and over until you find center again, at which point you are likely dead. True, you can just skip the level by looking up all the level passwords online, but it's not the same. Plus, chapter 3 isn't the only offender. On the other hand, the first level is super easy. Granted it's a first level so I can let it slide. The second level is just perfect in my opinion. It takes some time to learn patterns and patience, but it becomes worthwhile in the end. I remember playing this game as a very young kid and never getting far, maybe it was just because i was bad or maybe the game is more unfair than I thought. I even had a full blown joystick that we used too. Man do i wish that thing still worked.

Patience my young padawan

I first played these on an Apple Power Macintosh back in the day. The first one was unplayable on m&k. I got a joystick and it was better. Now if you have a controller like an Xbox controller (not sure is ps will work) it makes it the first one much easier. It definitely is hard as the controls suck but if you use the special code up + fire down + fire left + fire and right + fire at the Lucasarts logo it activates a level skip (press escape) and damage reduction (press +) that makes the first one playable. The second one is miles better. The first one is basically ANH and ESB blended together. Both games are fun and playable. I highly recommend to any SW fan but they aren't for everyone.

Pure nostalgic Jedi joy

What I always wanted in a Star Wars game - and on Gog.com. I was never a great fan of the X-Wing series, but that makes me no less a Star Wars maniac. I always fancied the idea of fighting Stormtroopers on foot, flying the Millennium Falcon, and riding a speederbike through Endor. You can do ALL of these in this game Rebel Assault II ! And more, of course. And the cutscenes were great too - featuring of course FMV, and not the previous computer graphic cutscenes of the Star Wars games before these. Okay so the speederbike level was utterly infuriating and had me pounding on the desk a lot, and the music made you even MORE tense than you were already. But it's overall a brilliant experience and I can't wait to play through it again. That was mostly about Rebel Assault II. Unfortunately I bought the original Rebel Assault some years after I'd bought that and was more than a little disappointed - there are BIG leaps in how smooth everything looks in the latter of these 2 games. But overall, even though a few of the levels do rely on the very limited 'AI' of the time involving FMV Stormtroopers popping out at set times from set places, it's a brilliant way to pass the time until they release the "Complete" edition of the new Battlefront game due this year.
