Star Wars™: Rebel Assault

Rebel Forces have won their first battle against the dark side... But the war has only just begun!

As Rookie One, you are thrust into a 3D galaxy far, far away to crush the evil Empire, once and for all. Take your T16 Skyhopper on a training run through Beggar's Canyon... Then dodge asteroids and blast TIE fighters in a deep space rumble... tackle a fleet of menacing AT-ATs on the icy tundra of Hoth... and ultimately annihilate Vader and the evil Empire with a kamikaze trench run on the infamous Death Star.

Star Wars™: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire

The story opens in the vicinity of the Dreighton Nebula, where Rookie One is part of a Rebel scouting patrol. He's investigating disappearances of Rebel spacecraft near Dreighton, a region rich with mythology about vanishing spacecraft. Legends of the region go back to the days when early hyperspace travelers lost their bearings and disappeared in the currents, eddies, and storms of the nebula. during the Clone Wars, two opposing combat fleets, at the height of battle, were swallowed up by the Dreighton Nebula, leaving it as the battle's only true victor.

Featuring original, live-action Star Wars footage, Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire hosts a multitude of ground-breaking improvements, including intuitive and challenging arcade game play; fifteen land, sky and space missions; an original Star Wars story; full-Screen high-quality video; four skill levels from easy to hard; a digital John Williams Star Wars soundtrack; and authentic sound effects by Skywalker Sound.

For a FMV game a masterpiece Rebel2 only

I would avoid the first, but the second is playable. I am 32 years old. I played this on it's original CD. Some of these kids reviewing this game are horribly misinformed. It's primitive but it is not a "bad game"... It DOES hold up given what it is... The game was from a time before most of these kids reviewing it were born. This game was from a time were FMV was an art form, and a very common / accepted way to play video games... They don't make FMV games anymore... You should be reasonable going into this game. You can't compare it to something it never was. If you're buying this expecting it to be anything other than a FMV game then that's your problem, not a fault of the game... The game itself has fun cinematics, that are sometimes funny (Mostly unintentionally like most FMV games). It's a bit cheesy but it's also a lot of fun. The cinematics still hold up reasonably well but of course you aren't going to get HD, 4K quality cinematics...more like a buffering youtube video. XD It's sometimes difficult to see where you're going in the flight sections of the game, but never so much that it's unplayable. This game came out before the Phantom Menace was even released. It was the closet thing to a new star wars movie that any could experience at the time. The game has numerous difficulty settings and on Beginner I managed to beat it again in just a few hours. You might need to change your mouse speed, mine is set a little lower in windows. Some sequences will take more than one play through. It just takes practice/ patience to beat this game. I had a blast replaying it in just one sitting. I can assure people that they can't beat this, then they just suck at this form of gameplay. It can be challenging, and some parts can take a few tries but it's not impossible. It's basically a rail game, sort of a arcade type of thing... It's still fun to play for its story, visuals but of course it's an archaic piece of video game history.

A nostalgia buy...

God this is an awful game! I remember it clearly even today, Rebel Assault 2 was my first PC game that my dad bought me. As a huge Star Wars fan I was in love with the game! But we have to be honest here - it didn't age well at all. From todays perspecitve it's unplayable, barely a game, more like an interactive movie (and not the fun kind). Repetitive gameplay doesn't help at all. I still own the original CDs, got this in the 2020 May4th sale. But it's really bad... You have a special relationship to the game like me? Add one star and get it. It's purely a nostalgia, not a "I am a fan of retro games and want to play them". Look at Tie Fighter - that aged moderately well. The story and gameplay is still great, just looks a bit dated. You can't say it about Rebel Assault. (I hope the developers won't read my review. Back then it may have been awesome and great, don't get me wrong! But not today, sorry)

RA 2 was good, RA 1 was hardly playable

Hi. Liked RA 2 a lot. Some chapters was very difficult, but finaly I passed them. As for RA 1 I´m having a very had time... I have got some help from GOG but is still on the mission when you fly a A-wing through crystalls. I´m not sure if its the controlls or if it is simply a very difficult level. Also shooting is a bit tricy. Seems like you first have to get the "fire" message before you can acctually shoot it. I feel like it "lock" fire controll when moving over a target. I say you buy this to play RA 2, RA 1 seem a bit hopless.

I was so young...

This relates to Rebel Assault 1 only... I played this game a ton on my old Apple IIgs. Or maybe my first 386. Probably spent a day configuring a boot disc to get all the RAM I needed. Even back then, part of me knew, this game had nothing to it. It's terrible. Flying beggars canyon is so evocative. The screenshots pull you in. But then you find you are pretty much on rails with really wonky hit detection on the walls. You aren't really doing much. Same with the assault on the Star Destroyer - so cool! But again you are on rails, and limited to pretty much flying down one side and trying to mouseover red boxes. Same TIE attacks on each pass. And if you miss one of the turbolaser batteries, you have to sit there for minutes waiting for the attack pass to cycle through again. This was supposed to be the "arcade-y" game, against the sim of X-Wing and others like Dark Forces. The other games were great. Masterpieces of their time, and still curios worth experiencing today. Rebel Assault was never good. And I played it over and over and over. It was all we had.

Not fun.

If you are interested in these games, watch some YouTube videos of them. Playing them isn't much different from watching them. Like most FMV games, you are on rails, shooting what pops up in front of you. ESPECIALLY if you liked X-Wing or Tie Fighter, this game will seem like a crummy phone app to you. The "on foot" third person parts are especially cheesy. It was exciting at the time to fly around an AT-AT in "3D," but by now, you have done this in Battlefront and a million other games. It was a nice technical experiment for the time, but if you play it today, you will feel very restricted and bored. #2 is better than #1, but ... still, not much fun.
