It was nice to play this game for a few hours, since I bought it in a sale. But after those hours it got kinda repetitive. The same thing happened when I started playing STAR WARS: Empire at War on STEAM. It's surely lengthy enough, with several campaigns ranging from the original trilogy to Episode 1: The Phantom Menace and Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
I played this game a lot when I was a kid and it's exactly as I remember it! Even though it's essentially a Star Wars reskin of Age of Empires II, it's still very engaging to play for a game released way back in 2001! The mechanics aren't too dated and the old graphics are even endearing at this point.
Unfortunately the publishers haven't cared to optimise the game at all...I shouldn't be having graphics problems with this game but surprisingly I do, and there is no option to switch the game from fullscreen to windowed mode.
If that was fixed, I wouldn't have any other complaints.
this ranges from good to skull against screen and keyboard smashingly awful.
1) The modified AoE 2 engine is not really suited to a Star Wars theme (nor any modern / scifi theme) game.
2) The AI cheats, cheats, cheats, cheats, CHEATS, CHEATS and CHEATS. Profanely. It must ignore all resource stock considerations, unit build time etc, given the way it sends wave after wave after wave after wave after wave non-stop at you.
3) Your attacks may as well be butter at a scorching frying pan. Just one AI turret will easily stop a two dozen strong unit attack.
4) Yet their units don't seem to have this problem. Just one or two of their units can cause havoc no matter how much fixed and fluid defence you have.
5) The AI is all seeing and all knowing. You can do nothing, NOTHING that the AI will not respond with the Peterist of Peter Perfect responses to. In fact I'd even go full hyperbole and say it is psychic! Or it just cheat spawns whatever perfect counter units it needs, on the spot.
6) I have never, ever seen such a demonstation of extreme "kiting" by the AI in any game ever!
7) The modified AoE2 engine seems to have removed all the user friendly features that made AoE2 so good to play, and added a shed load of AI friendly features in their place, that only serve to make this just, just "AAAAARRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHH" to play sometimes!
Not all scenarios are like this though. The more scripted and limited units scenarios work well. It's just the ones where the AI has full building and research and it's full gamut of cheats allowed that you won't have fun with.
