Easily in the top 10 best PC racers ever
This game has been on my wish list for quite a while, even though I own it on CD. Although this distribution isn't perfect, when it runs, it's beautiful. After all this time it is still one of a very short list of the best PC racers around. I wanted to play this on my travel Alienware netbook running 64 bit Windows 10 Pro, that has a Core i7, 16GB Ram, and Nvidia GT540m but it crashes nonstop. When it finally did work, it would only work at or lower than 800x600 and it looked terrible. Even when it did work it was not playable and it seems like the norm is for it to consistently crash and only rarely run for even a short while. I tried everything I could think of to get it to work, but nothing seemed to fix the issue. Ironically, it runs flawlessly at 1080p on a Dell SFF workstation Core2 Quad, 4GB Ram, and a Radeon HD 5450 running 32 bit Windows 10 Pro. I also tried it on a Bartop arcade system with a Core i3, 16GB Ram, and a Radeon R7 250, running 64 bit Windows 10 Pro. At a native resolution of 1366x768. Once again, it ran flawlessly and the graphics were clear and crisp. Circumstantial or not, AMD seems to be the winner on this game for me. Although, it isn't preferred since I bought this game to play on my netbook which should be more than enough to run this game. I highly doubt that NVidia is a bust on this game and the real issue is out there just waiting to be found. I also noted on the two machines that could actually run this game, it did not work well with my joysticks. One joystick is a USB corded XBox 360, and the other an after market Nintendo 64 USB corded controller. Neither would configure properly so I reverted back to keyboard only. Back in the day I used a Gravis Gamepad for this game and remember how choppy it would make the turns. It would be nice to have it working with a modern controller. Shadows of the Empire works perfectly with the XBox controller. Wink wink GoG. The game itself is stellar even after nearly 20 years. It has always been a configuration nightmare but I really did expect a bit more from GoG so hopefully they will tweak this and get it working for everyone in the 1.1 Hotfix release of the game. Regardless, even with the crashes it is worth 4 stars and I do not regret purchasing the GoG treatment.
