This was a game I looking for the day I registered on GOG. I was so disappointed that it wasnt there at the time. So glad it was added now. I downloaded and played it again immediately. this game held up over time. The campaign was great and I personally never had a crash, This game always did crash on me before. I was very happy with this release.
It's a decent real time strategy game and a decent Star Trek story/sim but combined it's something really special. It's one thing to be commanding starships and building bases, but there's a special touch when you're dealing with The Borg or The Klingons or recreating famous battles from the Trek films like Insurrection.
The graphics are crisp and the game runs very well even on a modern system. I had some graphical tearing in the cutscenes but that was hardly a deal breaker.
There's no real tutorial here so you're assumed to have read the manual or played another RTS. On the plus side this means pretty much instant action. You're given an objective and the rest of your actions are up to you in order to achieve this goal.
And there's a variety of goals. Sometimes you're base building and mining, sometimes using nebulas and black holes to escape superior forces, sometimes creating a flotilla of ships to hunt down invaders.
It all sounds authentic, there's plenty of voice acting, and there's some nifty if superfluous visual touches like the game being in full 3D so you can zoom in on any combat or ship action to admire the models.
It's got multiple campaigns with lots of missions and although clearly dated in some ways this is a Star Trek game through and through: shields, different stages of altertness (Green, Yellow and Red) and you repair vessels by replenishing your lost crew by beaming them aboard from a shipyard.
If you're a fan it's a fine experience and if you aren't it's still a very solid ship combat RTS.
Just noticed there is only an English language package. As I can speak it more or less good, it would be nice if you could give some other languages additionally as these versions exist actually
I love Star Trek, and this game is one of the best adaptations of the setting. The simplicity is the key: it's a straightforward Starcraft-like RTS, gather resources, deny them to the enemy, hit their base; that covers most of it, pretty much.
But that simplicity makes it accessible and lets you focus on the story, which is pretty good. It's sort of a TNG/DS9 crossover, set in the aftermath of the Dominion War. Most of the actors returned for their roles and there is a lot of them; the voice acting work is generally great.
The combat is amazing, in the context of Star Trek. Ships and bases have shields, hull, crew and sub-systems. As shields get hit, a bit of damage starts going through to the hull and systems and occasionally crew. Once the shields are down, the hull starts getting beat up, sub-systems can get disabled or completely destroyed and the crew starts dying. It lets you create some really neat, emergent, gameplay moments, where a ship loses shields, engines are dead, but the weapons work just long enough to blow up the enemy, and then the crew starts repairing stuff to get the ship moving, so they can limp back to the base. Boarding is also fun, and it follows the rules of ST: no transporting crew through raised shields.
I absolutely love this game, and I recommend it to any Star Trek fan, especially if they have any interest in real time strategy games.
Finally get to play these games again, this was one of my first PC games. I must of played on it alot back then not having much money for many games, I think I remember getting it to running on my next PC, with the odd sound issue, window xp, but then on to my third PC, when I went windows 7 was never able to get it working right, even after tutorials, community patchs, I might get it running but it have graphical errors or no sound, and would crash, so far on on my windows 10 setup no crash and all just works!!! Thanks GOG for making it happen! Would of loved a full remaster but this is the next best thing, cheers! just in time for xmas too. :)
