Star Control I & II

SC2 is great fun, but it's basically just a quest game. Contrary to what others have said here, SC2's Supermelee is just like a practice mode. SC1 is a game like Archon (from the same guys) where you have a 'strategic' turn based game with fights resolved in in an action game. I got 10 times as much gameplay out of SC1, which I played for months back when it came out, vs SC2 which pretty much you play through once and you're done.

Is one of the best games I ever played - and it will be for you if you are sci-fi orientated. Great adventure story and a vast space to explore combined with great space battles which require some practice. I remember always beating my brother in super melee mode with the shittiest ships when he used the most powerful ones :D

SC2 is one of the best games of all times: the story, the quirky alien races, the music -- all make for an unforgettable experience. BUT. Toys for Bob have open-sourced the game long ago, and you can actually download a much improved version on any platform for free; just Google 'The Ur-Quan Masters'.

I believe that Star Control 2 is the greatest PC game of all time. The writing, music, and gameplay all work together in a synergistic fashion that puts you on a fantastic quest to save the galaxy. I am puzzled why it is offered for sale here when the well-supported freeware version, "The Ur-Quan Masters", is available with updated graphics and sound. However, I am pleased to see the game receive more exposure, however it may happen. Fans have always wanted a "worthy" sequel. Perhaps "Star Control 3" will turn out to have only been a dream...

When you talk about the best games yet made (2021 at this time) you have to include Star Control 2. Its only drawback is its fair, though strict, time limit. But the writing is so funny, and the game is so much fun to play, it doesn't much matter. I'll stick up for this version rather than Ur Quan Masters for basic "look and feel" issues. But this is ultimately a preference call. Results may vary.
