Star Control I & II

The kind of excellent that comes with a huge "but". The games are both superb, but the second is available in a freeware remake already that makes buying it here pretty much obsolete. The first game is debatably obsolete as well, as the second and its freeware remake contain an expanded version of the melee battle mode. Personally, I would consider missing out on the more casual strategic scenario gameplay that the second lacks a shame, and worth purchasing both games for, as well as supporting an undeniable classic.

A lot of games on GOG are really good on the nostalgia value and are fun trips down memory lane. However, I'll still find myself playing more modern games more often then not (I'll admit it). However, SC2 grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go. Hours bled away as I explored a tiny corner of my galaxy, wondering what small wonders awaited me. This game is not overrated at all.

One of my cherished classics, SC2 brings nothing but smiles to my face. The humor is top-notch and dealings with the various races are often hilarous. The music also stirs fond memories of this great game I played "back in the day" (I played it a long time ago on my Amiga). No bugs or crashes under Windows7 64-bit, at least so far (about 1/4th played). If you've never heard of this game, you're in for a real treat. The graphics are primitive, yes (the game is almost 20 years old), but the gameplay is fun. It's primarily an explore and exploitation game (resource gathering) coupled with arcade-style space combat. The StarControl2 universe is huge with a large number of alien races to meet and interact with. SC-1 is pretty much just a space battles game without the story; it's not bad, but the real gem is SC2. I can't rate SC2 any higher, or I would (5 stars). Admittedly a lot of my affection is due to nostalgia, but it was well earned, and I'm pretty critical about games, new or old. Hey, it's the cost of a burger & fries, but offers hours & hours of fun. Well worth the purchase.

It has everything. If you like RPGs (not the leveling up & chase gear sort, but the story driven) or exploration, this game is for you. It's better than Dragon Age, that's for sure. Simple to play, yet almost unbelievably deep. This game has action (Arcade Asteroids style), character development, & exploration. But the graphics weren't even good in '92.
