Description
At its core, Space Pirates and Zombies is an action based, skill oriented, top down space combat game. It’s similar to the ones we knew and loved in years past, but now using full physics simulation and modern graphics for those oh so pretty explosions. But as you dig deeper, SPAZ becomes much more.

Instead of flying a single ship, you are in charge of an ever growing and evolving fleet, unlocking the rich tactical elements of SPAZ, all accessed at the touch of a button. Issue orders, change ships, apply fleet AI settings, all on the fly. At any moment the battle can change, and the Tactics Panel gives you the tools to make the battle turn in your favor.

As a layer on top of the action and tactics, we have a detailed technology and levelup system akin to what you would expect from an RPG. Learn to build new ships by destroying your enemies. Explore the galaxy to find components, use your hard earned research points to unlock their potential, and then customize every aspect of your new fleet.

Finally, there is the universe in which all this strife and adventure takes place. SPAZ features a persistent randomly generated Galaxy populated with story elements, factions, enemies, missions, items, to provide you with a unique experience each time you play. While you are struggling to survive, uncover the secret of an ever expanding Zombie infestation that spreads by establishing its own real time multi-tiered ecosystem.
  • Fight Zombie infestations, battling a full zombie ecosystem comprising four stages of un-life.
  • Explore a persistent randomly generated galaxy containing hundreds of star systems.
  • Freedom to explore the galaxy and take on challenges at your own pace.
  • The unique event system lets the player change the balance of power in any star system

interesting game but needs save on exit

BUYER BEWARE - The game does not allow you to save progress freely, not even on exit. It uses save points only. Would love to be able to save on exit. Please add this feature, Developers. I like the idea of the game. Very cool. The graphics are nice and clean and 2D the way I love it User Interfaces are great.. I'm trying to enjoy this game, but I've been playing just 2 hours and already lost over an hour of time invested because it won't save the game when you exit. WHY?!?!?!? Serves no purpose not to save on exit. So far I don't even see any indications of when it actually saves. I thought I reached a 'save point' having completed a mission, so I quit the game and had dinner. I came back and found I have to REDO the same mission again because it did not in fact save when I completed the mission. This is hugely annoying. I really don't think I can invest time in a game that won't save on exit. I have no time to waste redoing things for no good reason. I wish it had mentioned the lack of save capability in the game description. I would not have bought the game at all.

Expectations lead to varying experience

Ask uself - what do you want from this game? If you are searching for space action with rpg elements and factions - just move onto https://www.gog.com/game/drox_operative already and forget about this title. However, if you wanna casual top down timekiller - this game is exactly what you need. Fly from system to system, do similar (and rarely unique) quests, buy upgrades, grind swags, unlock ships, repeat. Tactics (your party may feature multiple ships, while you actively control only one), factions and all such stuff exist, but as very barebones - even children can master this game. Each mission/fight take about 5 (maybe 10 at the very begining) minutes to complete - excellent to skip time, while your meal heats up (but keep in mind that you cant save during fight). Personally, I would rate this 7 timekillers out of 10

Excellent and Original

This game was a breath of fresh air. A huge galaxy to explore, a story that keeps you intrigued yet lets you explore at your own pace. Maybe it's because I'm a casual guy (and playing my game on the lowest difficulty) but I enjoy just slowly leveling up and exploring new star systems - and the games lets you do that. Combat is fun and intuitive. You can customize a ton, though it takes many hours until you have a good stable of ships and equipment to play around with. I also liked some of their ambient radio chatter. The one about the pirate that finds a derelict ship and a certain 'something' growing on the walls is classic. My only gripes are minor. I found the "popularity" mechanic kind of lame. Not popular? Hand over slaves ("goons") and be loved again in 2-3 clicks. I also didn't like a bunch of the ship designs. It's just aesthetics...So many look very alien and asymmetrical. I like symmetry...Or at least a bubble cockpit now and then. Overall a great experience that is addictive and fun. Recommended, though I'm glad I bought it on sale.

good price/quality ratio

Got this game since relase and i have to tell the time spent on it since then its by far superior then many so called "AAA" titles i got. Played like 150h actually, sometimes it happens i reinstall it. Its basically a 2D shooter where every ship got his mass and inertia, rotation speed etc, and it needs some practice to become skilled and effective, also im sure there are personal preferences about what ship combination can be more effective. The game is interesting and gives back a lot of satisfaction improving and going on. There is a main story arc, there are many ships, weapons, blueprints to discover, upgrades, a lot to discover and overall its fun. The big cons are that the game after some time start to get very repetitive, also later in the game the difficulty level imho rises too much compared to the start. Anyway beside some flaws for the selling price i can give my thumb up for this title

Very good «poor» game

7/10 The game is noticeably poor, though a complete game, very well implemented and it brings fresh ideas/genre. "Poor" but not a sandbox, not half-baked, not half-complete, no bugs. Recommend it to those who like side-scrolling shooters and ActionRPGs - gave me some 30~80h of good fun. # Technically After 1 full run-through I haven't experienced any crash or even any noticeable quirk. My only minor complaint is the Alt-Tab didn't work. I ran on Linux (Ubuntu 22.04) - Linux is usually a 2nd grade citizen yet even here (mostly) everything ran without a glitch. # Art Graphics are only decent to look at but do their job quite well - things are easy to distinguish and good-looking enough. The menus are quite functional, although once again nothing glorious. The portraits .. well, close to pathetic, actually. A complaint, the System menu was rather annoying, as it always opens zoomed into the middle - a good example of small'ness of the game's production value. # Gameplay A mix of a classic 2D scrolling shooter with Action RPG. I had great fun navigating, fighting the battles and evolving the equipment and tech tree. Oh, the joy of using a new larger ship or new devastating laser!!! The game is balanced between fights and resource gathering (much more focused on fights). The difficulty balance also looked well achieved. Some things felt like they could be grandeur, like a fixed 4 levels of equipment (though makes the balancing much easier). Can be played many different ways, from relaxed spewing missiles/drones from a distance, or action'ny with an agile ship while leaving the larger ships to AI. # Story This was a very odd one. I felt the game was kind of cheeky/humorous (space zombies?) but turned out it had a rather serious tone and .. even quite dark. And I have to say, the overall story arch was actually good - this caught me off guard. The writing, though, felt very poorly implemented and it even spoils the overall tone/story arch.
