Description
At its core, Space Pirates and Zombies is an action based, skill oriented, top down space combat game. It’s similar to the ones we knew and loved in years past, but now using full physics simulation and modern graphics for those oh so pretty explosions. But as you dig deeper, SPAZ becomes much more.

Instead of flying a single ship, you are in charge of an ever growing and evolving fleet, unlocking the rich tactical elements of SPAZ, all accessed at the touch of a button. Issue orders, change ships, apply fleet AI settings, all on the fly. At any moment the battle can change, and the Tactics Panel gives you the tools to make the battle turn in your favor.

As a layer on top of the action and tactics, we have a detailed technology and levelup system akin to what you would expect from an RPG. Learn to build new ships by destroying your enemies. Explore the galaxy to find components, use your hard earned research points to unlock their potential, and then customize every aspect of your new fleet.

Finally, there is the universe in which all this strife and adventure takes place. SPAZ features a persistent randomly generated Galaxy populated with story elements, factions, enemies, missions, items, to provide you with a unique experience each time you play. While you are struggling to survive, uncover the secret of an ever expanding Zombie infestation that spreads by establishing its own real time multi-tiered ecosystem.
  • Fight Zombie infestations, battling a full zombie ecosystem comprising four stages of un-life.
  • Explore a persistent randomly generated galaxy containing hundreds of star systems.
  • Freedom to explore the galaxy and take on challenges at your own pace.
  • The unique event system lets the player change the balance of power in any star system

There is only sand in this box

While the mechanics are pretty fun at first, I can't help but feel that the game falls flat in the long run. Sure, there's lots of tech to discover, but you'll get your hands on all of it in short order. The rest of the game is a long slog through its RPG elements just to equip it. SPAZ tries to present you with the impression of a galaxy-sized sandbox with hundreds of systems to play in, but there is not enough content or variation to support it. Every star system is a retread of the one that came before it, with the same two factions, the same twenty-ish missions, and largely unnoticeable variations in tech. The factions are just faceless retreads of each other and completely isolated to boot, leading to the debate of "which one do I hate more today" when entering a new system. The addition of the titular zombies in the endgame brings with it a new set of fifteen-ish missions to replace the old ones, a new set of time-consuming and annoying mechanics for dealing with their ships, and a swift kick to your carefully cultivated sandbox. None of the good will and system power you build up in the early game actually carries over to the endgame, despite it being integral to the final quest. In short, it's a long slog and a good way to burn hours upon hours, but SPAZ is best taken in bite-sized chunks in the tiniest randomized galaxy you can make. Unless you're a die-hard fan of the genre, the novelty will wear off quite fast.

Simple, addicting and fun

I'm pretty amazed that one of my favorite indie games is finally here. Although game is quiet easy to understand, it takes some time to master. It has also long length (30-40+ hours) and high replay-value. Story is pretty simple: you are part of the crew, whose goal is to get to center of the galaxy to acquire the treasure rumored to be there. The galaxy is on the civil war, where civilians and security forces battle. You can choose, which side you choose to fight with or just ignore them completely. Or you could try challenge headquaters of dominating side of the sector which you currently are. Also when getting closer to the core, bounty hunters and at last "zombies" show's up. In each sector you can also do different missions, which give resources, rise your relationship with certain sides etc. Also by destroying unknown enemy ships you acquire blueprints for those ships and for weapons etc. you can buy blueprints from certain sectors. In short, you have 50+ different ships from tiny ships to huge cruisers with possibility to choose all things attached to it from shields to missiles and from lasers to engines. Controls are pretty simple: from arrows you control ship, from mouse you aim for target and fire. You can also stop game for a moment and command your other ships to attack different enemies, move to certain point in the battle map or retreat to repair their ship. In short, SPAZ is simple, but very addicting, lengthy and enjoyable game.

That space fighting game itch...

A great top-down space shooter that uses newtonian physics. Although the story and gameplay isn't as good and addicting as Ring Runner or quirky as Operation Inner Space, it has it's own mechanics that carry it. Play how you want to play. Be the good guy and try to keep the balance and make friends. Be the bad guy, blow every base up and kick down every gate to get through the galaxy. However some of these choices come back to you haunt you in the last portion of the game when you have to build up the defenses against the growing zombie threat. Take on heavy missions of battle, or relax and just collect a few thousand rez and restore your supply at a mining station; Or hang out as the two local factions fight eachother and collect data from the wreckage like a vulture. Your play style may be governed more by your own strength or weaknesses more than your morals will.

Pure Grind - Missed Opportunity

Basic concept decent enough, game runs well enough but it's nothing more than just pure level grinding through and through.

Repetitive Grind

I like space games. I love them. Even so much, that I gave SPAZ more than one chance after uninstalling it quickly the first time. The second time I even played around 20 hours or so. I really tried to like it. But I can't. Why? Every f****** mission plays the same. While the whole upgrading and resource gathering seems good enough at first, there's just no point to it in the long run: The missions keep feeling exactly like they did before. Maybe your blasters pack more punch, but so do the enemies shields. In essence, this game is like just taking the grind out of very grindy games and leaving everything else away. So, as much as I love space games, this GOG purchase is one of the view going into my "hidden" tab never to be seen again.
