Description

A Victorian steampunk RPG with tarot cards instead of dice. Investigate the disappearance of society’s most vulnerable to uncover a mysterious cult. Play as three characters, each with their own skills and motivations. Customize your characters with narrative choices to unlock new tarot cards.

Explore an open world in this Victorian steampunk cRPG. Choose from three playable characters with branching stories that intertwine. Investigate, interact, and take action to leave your mark on the world and its inhabitants. No random stat points here, use your skills to level them up, and trust your fate to our tarot card chance system.

So, how will you solve your problems? Combat, persuasion, magic, explosives? The choice is yours and all your cards are on the table; but be careful, the docklands aren’t for the faint of heart.

Tarot Card Chance System – Leave your dice at home as you interact with a variety of characters. NPC’s react to your gender, race, appearance, and choice of dialogue, so you’d better look and act the part if you want the “right” results. But not everything is certain, luck plays a role and it’s all in the cards with our tarot card chance system.

Skill and Etiquette System - The skills you use will improve your ability, while ignoring others will cause them to stagnate. Master the skills you choose and learn more about the world and its inhabitants to unlock special dialogue and skill-check options.

So go, see, do! And don’t be afraid to try the unconventional. Drown yourself in gin? Sure, provided you’ve got the constitution for it. Smoke that opium? Certainly, but be careful not to doze off— it might not be safe here. Put it all on black? You only live once, as they say. Even in failure you learn something…

A Rich Open World to Explore - A steampunk fantasy-inspired Victorian London awaits; filled with interesting characters and locations. Explore the back alleys, opium dens, brothels, and more at your peril, or relax and enjoy their simple pleasures. Investigate, interact, and take action to forge your own path.

Three Characters, Three Different Stories – Play as one of three characters with stories that intertwine through the city’s docklands and unfold based on your choices.

  • Atticus Daley, an orphaned minotaur magician crawling out of the bottom of a bottle to find a sense of belonging, and his next fix.
  • Clara Reed, a corsair with a checkered past, and a cunning woman with a rebellious streak. Follow her on a search for vengeance, and the courtesan killer.
  • Otto, the trusty automaton and companion of engineer Theodore Redgrave. More than just the sum of his parts, Otto wants more to life than servitude and utility.

Each character has their own mix of skills, equipment, and expertise, and they might just have to work together to succeed. Will you trust your companions, and should they trust you? Not everyone is a hero after all.

Features:

  • A large open world to explore, 20 different locations spread over the city’s east docklands
  • Three playable characters
  • Three intertwined stories to experience
  • Branching narrative and dialogue system
  • Character customization
  • Tarot card chance system
  • Single-player

Disco Elysium/Shadowrun in Fallen London

I'd argue that Disco Elysium was the first big foray into a roleplaying game entering the realm of the psyche as much as the traditional 'ability scores'. You had to contend with your ego and id which carried on conversations in your mind so that each encounter was a battle with the self...and that legacy continues with Syndicate only in an imaginative fantasy/steampunk alternative London. This is not an action RPG with the emphasis firmly on the 'roleplaying' aspect. You aren't just dictating a character's path of their humors, their memories, what they will risk and what they are capable of. You can get into fights and undertake skill checks but out of these you lose 'hope' instead of health, and most of the time you're balancing your chosen aspects of personality with choices to unlock new 'tarot cards' which create new opportunities. Take a blunt approach? Unlock new opportunities to intimidate and smash things. Become introspective? Discover new options for deeper thought and self control. It's ambitious, it's fascinating, and it's no slouch in terms of breadth. You can collect inventory items, come up with different solutions to problems, unlock new paths with choices made that are unique to each new play through. There's multiple characters with their own interlocking stories so it's not just Disco Elysium with a steampunk skin. There's also a card based instead of dice based element of random chance. Similar to Disco though anything you can walk away from is not game over. You failed a test? Let it be a lesson and the earned unintentional changes to your character perhaps set a new path entirely going forward. Nice graphics, pleasant music. No voice overs, but thankfully there's a lot of definitional info for the slang and weirder concepts in the dialogue itself. I want to see more games like this that put the RP back into RPGs.

Really enjoyable narrative RPG

Sovereign Syndicate is an ambitious take on the Disco Elysium formula with focus on dialogue and narrative but shakes it up a bit with a more interesting and Arcanum-like steampunk Victorian London setting. Additionally there is a Tarot card system for dice rolls and Tarot major Arcana cards for unlocking personality traits depending on the choices you make. Failing dice rolls is fully expected and drives the plot forward in different ways. Your choices and rolls also affect your Hope meter which ranges from Desperate to Hopeful and may open up even more dialogue choices. The main characters are well written, with their paths connecting in an intriguing story. You can see diverse locations with different individuals that range from poor to rich and shady to high class. There is adequate content to most of these locations and this reflects a truly fleshed out world. In addition I love the victorian era lingo because it makes the game even more immersive and fortunately comes with adequate explaination. Overall the game is great and it should be played by all fans of the genre. I hope to see more from the studio now that RPGs are in the spotlight.

Victorian Elysium

This game is mostly recommended to those who enjoyed Disco Elysium as its mechanics take a hearthy inspiration from it but enough differences to stand on its own two feet. The Tarot system lets you essentially play four different personalities for each of the three main character. With cerain actions additional cards can be unlocked, giving you more varied approaches to situations. Camera control is far from perfect and some quests need better indications. The ending seems a tad rushed as well, leaving loose ends to some story lines. All in all, if you enjoy narrative-based stories, definitely try this out!

Powerful story, good characters, linear

This is an excellently crafted world with fascinating characters and a immersing story. The atmosphere is excellently built and the character arcs are compelling. However this is very much an interactive story rather than a true rpg: player decisions don't seem to have much impact, and the story proceeds in a tight linear way from chapter to chapter without much branching

Solid Disco Elysium-type Adventure

A very solid game, with an interesting story, well-developed characters and some predictable but still exciting twists. Clearly a lot of heart and soul in it. Definitely an indie game, but it's just the right amount of janky. The ratio of conversation content + skill checks vs running around slowly exploring is lightly more skewed to the 'running around' than Disco Elysium was, which can get a bit tedious at times, but it is more than enjoyable enough.
