its the game against which I compare ALL roguelike deckbuilders (and most non-deckbuilding roguelikes).
how do they make a game with so much variance also feel like you are only ever held back by your own skill/game knowledge?? I s2g its witchcraft.
The game is perfect for those players that know how to get creative with these permadeath rogue-like games. The game does have the great mechanic of often giving you something new to play with. You unlock a new card or you learn some mechanic about the game. This is a great game up there with the likes of Hades, Children of Morta and FTL. But if you don't know how to experiment, how to get creative with these one run skilltree creators, then you probably won't spend tens or hundreds of hours on this. Good game. Would play again.
The game has:
fast progression
4 classes
3 levels
hundreds of cards
lovely characters
and a lot of options to get creative
The game does not have:
anything to make me creative.
The game is fun and challenging, but u know what? There's one solid rule in most of my battles. I mean, when enemy is about to attack, i get only attack cards and i cant use defence, so i am receiving all dmg. Next turn enemy is not attacking, then i am getting only defence cards and i can't even damage enemies usually. it's still a miracle that i reached lvl 3 boss few times and almost beaten him...
I bet its only me having that bad luck, the game is great and addictive. If u tend to have more luck than me, surely u will fall in love with this game.
Slay the spire may be my top game of all time, simply because it scratches so many itches that I have as a strategy gamer — drafting strategy, long-term decisions, interesting tactical mechanics which combine in unique ways on each run, and progression through learning rather than grinding.
Slay the Spire seems very difficult when you first start it, but as you learn how to draft and pilot your runs, things become easier and easier until you're winning every run on the base difficulty. That kind of dramatic skill progression in a game feels very rare, because most games will also progress your character with some kind of meta improvements in your strength, and it's hard to tell how much better you are at the game compared to when you started.
Learning how to build insane combos, increase your tempo, crush the bosses and beat the hardest elite fights in the game is incredibly rewarding and feels amazing. This game just keeps giving more and more as you ascend the difficultly levels, and you begin to question the assumptions that brought you to this point and rethink the way you play the game completely.
5 stars is not enough.
As other reviewers said, this game start nice and addictive to slowly (not so for me...) sank in frustration, desperation and loss of hair.
I own this game on Steam (but I assume same gameplay).
I'll not go into the details of the game mechanics (too lazy to do that) but I'll explain the simple reasons why I feel this game is frustrating and brought me to baldness:
1. When you die (and you will die bloody too often) you start always with nothing more than... nothing.
-- This alone, after a few deaths, will be taxing and having you need a coffee.
2. Many things are RNG based: map, loot, monsters, hits, etc.
-- This can easily create borderline unwinnable situations that, obviously, for common men, means doom.
And that's it.
Repeat the above ad infinitum and you will have a perfect combo of a addictive, frustrating game.
Now, personally, I'm much more easily frustrated than addicted so I binned the game and living an happy life.
