Slay the Princess! (Or, maybe don't.)

Slay the Princess a darkly humorous (or humorously dark) visual novel with a metric crapton of branching endings and more twists than a flock of origami cranes. Which may or may not contain existential dread and eldritch horrors. Who may or may not be the princess. Lovely artstyle, oodles of branching paths, with each of them short enough for a quick game. Along with being fully narrated by the Princess, the snarky Narrator and the Voices in your Head, it's a lovely creepy little experience of a game. Don't delay. Someone has to kill the Princess, and it might as well be you.

This is a game review

I was not sure if I would like this. I heard it described as "meta" in the vein of Stanley Parable, and the store page description almost makes it sound like a "joke" game. Neither of those are my bag. But having finished it, I would say neither of those impressions are true. It turned out to be an absolute 5-star game/VN for me. The visuals and music are both intentionally minimalist but extremely effective. The voice acting is very competent, but the recording quality isn't quite good. It's not quite bad either, but it doesn't sound like professional equipment or a studio environment. It is an indie game, to be fair. The story is what sets it apart. The cast of characters is small but they are developed and used quite well. How it was told - structurally - was very interesting. It can be easily played in small bites, but for The Best Experience I would suggest setting aside a few hours and letting yourself get fully immersed. The ending (the one I got, anyway) was surprisingly emotional, and I really treasure it. Last note is just about the writing... it's really good. Far better than is typical for games, frankly. They played the mystery and profundity just right, without ever becoming pretentious or verbose. Full marks, no notes.

An interesting and immersive experience

Bought the game out of curiosity from the pitch of being sent to kill a princess that would destroy the world otherwise and facing with a dilemma of either trusting the narrator or the princess. I launch the game expecting to do a quick try and come back to it later, but I got hooked into the story and played until I eventually reached the end and missed half a night of sleep without noticing. Once you get to make your first choices, you want to try again and fix your mistake, or try something to see what would happen, except what's happening now are consequences of the choice you made previously. A lot of branching to try and explore and build a different story.

Wait was worth it

There are only 3 people in this game and one of them is You. This game is equal parts enigmatic, scary, horrifying, funny (the Adversary route is a highlight for me for now), but it all sums up in an unique way to what the devs wrote of it: "This is a love story." "could go either way" - nerif the oracle
