Mostly a bad game

I've recently beaten this game from start to end, and I have to say that the game was mostly bad. The game has a good start, the beginning was mysterious and very interesting, but after 30 minutes or less it started to get boring. The combat and the controls were bad, especially with the camera angles. The areas were mostly uninteresting. There was one interesting enemy, but many of the enemies were uninteresting especially the ghosts which gets annoying and used way too often. There was no buildup between the main characters and the main villain. Without spoiling anything, the story was boring, and most of the characters felt bland. You have to read the memos if you want to get any idea of what is going on and on how to defeat the ghosts, if you didn't you will become more confused. The inventory system was annoying. You can carry up to 10 items, each 10 bullets of the handgun are considered 1 item. You have to go back to the apartment to dump the items before picking up the key items.

Still not good enough.

This game recently got updated to be in line with the GOG preservation project, and now it's being touted as the definitive way to play this game due to it having restorted hauntings and some bugfixes, but it still falls short of the PS2 version in key ways. Two worst examples: - Control bindings are still a total mess. You're still asked to map every *function* to a button but can't have overlap. You can't have your Start button be "pause" and also "skip cutscene", it'll force you to dedicate an entire controller button *just* to skip cutscenes. Default controls still seem to be all over the place still as well. - Controls are still completely non-analog. The original PC port of this game had clumsy controller support that simply mapped controller inputs to keyboard keys, which has the effect of the player character only being able to move in 8 directions with the analog stick. It's also impossible to move the camera slowly or at not exact 45 degree angles in the first person portions of the game. This game already had fan patches for the restored hauntings. This new update is not a significant improvement on a PC port that is poor at its core.

A very weak entry in the SH series

This is definitely the weakest of the Silent Hill games (At least of those released on PC, which were the only ones i played). I really wanted to like it. The premise is really good: locked in the room, strange hole in the bathroom... And the mystery with the Walter Sullivan murders. It really got me. And it has some good creepy imagery. But this game broke me with its controls. Navigating your protagonist is a chore. Not even does he change his direction as soon as the camera perspective changes, he also feels so slow and sluggish, especially in combat. And the automatic lock on system there hurts more than it helps. Sometimes it felt like i was fighting the game more than the enemies. And then i got the AI companion and that was it for me. After 7 hours i just couldn't take it any more and felt a frustration i rarely felt while playing a game. After all your frustration level might be higher, but i am done with this. I give this game two stars because of the burping hospital zombies (which made me laugh pretty hard, especially when they were falling down the stairs, burping constantly), and the amazing music by Akira Yamaoka.
