While the game starts out very interestingly, it disappoints by becoming a slog filled with incredibly frustrating mechanics from the middle of the game and until the very end. Invincible enemies that follow you through level stages (and never stop), clunky combat, boring arsenal of weapons, limited inventory system (that attempts to copy Resident Evil but fails miserably).
The frustrating mechanics distract from the story, the spookiness and basically everything else, leaving you irritated at everything else that happens, especially the characters which do nothing to improve upon the story.
The puzzles involving the room itself work quite well (first person sections), however, and is the strongest/scariest part of the game. It is not enough to save the game from leaving a disappointed taste in your mouth, unfortunately.
So i,ve been a huge silent hill fan my first one was silent hill 4 back on a demo disc i had for ps2 that was when my addiction grew ive had both xbox and playstation and have play numerous of games on both consoles but something i can't find anymore are the silent hill games downpour got completely taken down on both platforms and now i have a gaming pc and not a cheap one by no means but i would like to play all the silent hill games now.
I always loved Silent Hill 4. While certainly not on par with the first three, it's still a good game. The various Otherworlds you find yourself feel ominous, dark, menacing; music and ambiance are good enough, definitely not the best, but they do their job well enough. Gameplay is interesting, I like the limited inventory, as it forces the player to think what to take and what to leave behind, either in the Otherworld or in the trunk at home. Combat is okay-ish like in the first three games, but now you can dodge and do a power strike after charging your attack. Characters sound still a bit numb to everything that is happening, talking like they are still half-asleep. But I always loved that about the Silent Hill series, makes me feel even more confused about whatever the hell is happening, so it unsettles me, like a good horror game should do. Never understood how people got annoyed at escorting the support character in the second half of the game, she is a death machine when you give the chain as a weapon. Besides, she is best girl of the series, Heather is boring and annoying despite her being the main character of the third game, which nonetheless is a much better game than Silent Hill 4.
I will reiterate: I always loved Silent Hill 4, despite it being the black sheep of the original four. So why only one star? The reason is Konami and their pathetically lazy attitude: you release an old game, supposedly so that people who never played on the PS2 may experience it for the first time. Yet you fail to modernize it properly: graphics look blurrier than the ones on PS2, proper controller support is nothing but a mere legend, the game looks even brighter than the original PC port which I mean, come on, this is Silent Hill, not the Wumpa Islands. Cutscenes are no longer at 15 fps, so I guess that's that.
In short, if you want to play this game, there are other ways. If you can, play the original PS2 release. It pains me to say it, this port is not worth the money.
This game features a lot of unnecessary running around and backtrack, it's way too stretched out and at some point you'll have to wait for a tedious and slow companion to follow you exactly to the doors of every segment (and there's plenty of those) otherwise they will not show up in the next room, apartment section is great and overall premise is interesting but it's very poorily executed.
It really makes you wonder if they made it annoying on purpose.
